Yamaha R15 V4 vs Bajaj Pulsar RS200: Commitment vs Comfort!

The Yamaha R15 V4 and the Bajaj Pulsar RS200 are two bikes in the entry-level sportbike segment that have quite a cult following. The former has that because it’s a fantastic sportbike, while the latter brought in a lot of the early ‘Pulsarmania’ back in the day. 

And now, quite a while after they were both launched, they’re still selling quite well. And if you’re in this segment, looking for your first sportbike, these are two good options too. So here’s our take on which of the two you should eventually go for: 

Price & Variants

• The Yamaha R15 V4 does have the lower price tag, but the RS200 has a bigger engine. The 150cc vs 200cc comparison always exists and for that, the premium that the RS200 carries over the R15 doesn’t seem unreasonable. 

• Now while just having a larger engine doesn’t automatically make the RS200 quicker or more exciting, it’s often how we Indians perceive value for money. 

• So if we strictly talk about bang for your buck, the RS200 seems to be packing a bit more at a slightly higher price. So while this was a close one, the Pulsar is the bike that wins this round. 

Dimensions & Design 

• With their low seat heights, narrow stance and overall approachable dimensions, none of the two bikes are really hard to ride. Even for a beginner, they’re both inviting enough for the rider to get on and make mistakes. 

• The one figure though, that’ll grab your attention, is the massive 25kg weight difference. The RS200 is a substantially heavier bike and it’ll feel in the way the bikes ride as well. While the Yamaha bike changes directions with minimal inputs, you will have to put in a bit more force in order to get the RS200 to change lanes. While the difference isn’t massive, it’s definitely noticeable. 

• Design-wise, it’s the R15 that comprehensively beats the RS200. The Yamaha bike looks exactly what a sportbike should look like: committed, fast and very very sporty. While the RS200 looks sporty as well, the taller handlebars and more comfortable riding posture take away from the original sportbike feels and it just doesn’t have the appeal and finish levels that the R15 has. 

Features & Safety

• The R15 was launched nearly a decade before the RS200 and yet it’s the bike that has received the more updates of the two. Over the years, Yamaha has ensured that the bike has kept up with the times and despite being a humble 150cc bike, the R15 boasts features that much bigger bikes can’t. 

• Along with the basics, the bike even has a quickshifter, a traction control system and even variable valve actuation! These are things that we had previously only seen on much bigger bikes. 

• The RS200, while iconic, hasn’t really received the sort of comprehensive update that it should have, and that’s why it’s lagging behind in features. While it has dual-channel ABS, we think it should’ve at least had a basic traction control system, for you can never be too safe on our roads. 

Engines

• Here is where both bikes are the closest. Both the engines feel the best when they’re being revved out and they’ll feel the happiest when they’re kept above around 6000rpm. That’s when the engines truly come alive. 

• Under that, they both don’t really have much going on. While they’re both tractable, and will happily chug around town in a higher gear than required, they won’t really feel exciting till you wind them up. 

• While the RS200 is a lot more powerful, it’s also a lot heavier than the R15 V4. So for all practical purposes, it’s not that the Bajaj bike will feel substantially quicker. 

Verdict 

So which bike should you buy? It boils down to what you want. If you want something that’s more of an all-rounder, you should get the Bajaj Pulsar RS200. The riding ergonomics are easier for your back to manage and it still has a bit of that sportbike charm. 

But if you want to commit to a proper sportbike, just get the Yamaha R15 V4, for it doesn’t get much better than that in this segment. Yes, it’s committed and will require some amount of fitness, but it’s also equally rewarding when you get it right. The R15 will keep you entertained for a long time and that isn’t something a lot of bikes in this segment can promise.
