Yamaha R15 V4 vs Suzuki Gixxer 150: A Detailed Comparison
We help you pick the best entry-level sports bike
The Yamaha R15 V4 has been dominating the entry level sportbike market for quite some time now. One more bike in this segment that we tend to overlook is the Suzuki Gixxer 150. Suzuki hasn’t given the bike a properly comprehensive update in quite a while and that’s exactly why it’s often overlooked.
But today we will put the 2 Japanese entry level sportbikes against each other to see which one really deserves your hard-earned money:

- One look at the table and you will feel that the R15 V4 is quite an overpriced 150cc bike. And that isn’t exactly untrue, for the Yamaha bike’s price has been hiked up quite a lot over the past few years.
-
The Suzuki Gixxer 150, on the other hand, is fantastic value for money and still feels like quite a sweet deal at a fair bit under Rs 1.5 lakh, ex-showroom. So if we talk about just winning the price war, it has to be the Gixxer 150.
-
That said, the R15 V4 justifies its price tag with the kit on offer and sheer excitement. But more about that later.

- There aren’t any immediately massive differences in terms of dimensions that really stand out. What’s noticeable, though, is that the Gixxer 150 is as much as 7kg heavier than the R15 V4. Given how light the R15 feels to ride and even walk around, we wouldn’t be surprised if the weight difference felt even more than that.
-
Apart from that, these are both approachable bikes. Riding ergonomics-wise, the R15 V4 is a lot more committed with a much lower handlebar and footpegs that are high and set towards the rear. You will find yourself in quite a committed position.
-
While taller people will struggle on the R15, it is something that you get used to, over a period of time.
-
On the Gixxer 150, you will find that the taller handlebar and relaxed ergonomics put you in a much more comfortable position.

- There’s a stark difference between the two bikes’ features list and this is one of the places where we feel that the R15 justifies its higher price tag. There’s traction control, dual-channel ABS, a slipper clutch and even riding modes.
-
And if you thought they weren’t enough, there’s even a quickshifter and variable valve actuation, something we’ve not seen in much bigger bikes as well. For a 150cc bike to have all of this is quite impressive.
-
Suzuki hasn’t given the Gixxer 150 is a much simpler bike of the two, but that also helps it be that much more affordable

- This is the other place where the R15 V4 starts justifying its price tag. It makes substantially more power and at higher revs, meaning it’s faster, quicker and when you rev it out, it’s very satisfying.
-
After about 6000rpm, the R15 V4 comes into its own and roars to its redline with a sort of excitement that no one has been able to match in this segment.
-
The Gixxer 150 is a much more docile motorcycle, something that’s made for relaxed commuting rather than outright excitement. If you want that, you will like it. But our assumption is that sportbike enthusiasts would want more performance and excitement from their bikes and that’s exactly why we love the R15 V4 a lot more.
Verdict
The Suzuki Gixxer 150 is a really good bike, on its own. It has the refinement, the looks, and a certain level of excitement as well. While it's not as performance-oriented or sharp handling as the R15, it is does all the basics correctly. You can commute, your can do your weekend runs, and also long-distance riding with proper planning. All of that without being as expensive as the R15.
The Yamaha R15 is the more expensive one here but it gets more performance, kit, features and excitement, while looking like it’s a much bigger bike than it actually is.
Both the bikes are good entry-level sport bikes, that can be in your garage for a long time. Choosing one of the two then primarily comes down to your budget.
