These bikes were teased last year but are yet to hit Indian roads

The 2018 Auto Expo was an eyeopener of sorts. It gave us a glimpse into the electric future with mainstream manufacturers and startups alike displaying a host of interesting electric two-wheelers. However, it has been close to two years and quite a few of these have not yet been launched. Here’s a list:

TVS Creon:

The TVS Creon concept was one of the highlights of the 2018 Auto Expo. This sporty looking scooter claimed to deliver 16PS from its electric motor and a 0-60kmph time of 5.1 seconds! It did miss out on range though claiming just 80km on a full charge. Features included all-LED lighting, a colour TFT instrument console and connected technology co-developed with Intel. In the years that have passed, the closest bike we have seen to a TVS electric scooter has been an electric Jupiter being tested in Bengaluru.

Emflux One:

This electric superbike promises visceral acceleration from its 53kW liquid-cooled AC induction motor, which delivers 68PS of power and 84Nm of torque. It claims to go from 0-100kmph in 3 seconds flat while its lithium-ion battery pack delivers a claimed 200km range. Not just performance, the electric superbike gets top-spec suspension components in the form of fully adjustable Ohlins suspension, Brembo brakes with monobloc calipers and Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tyres. Deliveries for the Emflux One were expected to start by April this year but that has been affected by a series of delays. We do not expect this electric superbike to launch this year.

Vespa Elettrica:

Vespa sells the Elettrica overseas and to be fair it mentioned that there were no plans of launching this electric scooter in India. So the electric scooter was more of a showpiece at the Vespa pavilion. While it looks exactly like other Vespas, underneath that steel bodywork sits an electric motor that delivers 4kW and 200Nm of torque. Performance is equivalent to a 50cc Vespa while the claimed range is 100km. Now that Bajaj is set to launch the Chetak electric scooter, Vespa might contemplate launching a locally manufactured version of the Elettrica.

UM Renegade Thor:

The Thor electric cruiser was unveiled with much fanfare at the 2019 Auto Expo. UM even went ahead and announced its price tag of Rs 9.9 lakh. Underneath the faux fuel tank sat a large battery pack and a liquid-cooled 30kW motor that made 70Nm of torque from zero rpm. It even got a conventional 5-speed gearbox. Its claimed top speed was 180kmph, while the range was pegged at 270km. UM had plans of locally assembling the motorcycle in India but after its unceremonious exit, the Renegade Thor remains a pipe dream.

Honda PCX Electric:

Like Vespa, Honda too had no plans of getting the PCX electric to India and the electric scooter was present to display the company’s electric technology prowess. The PCX Electric sold abroad gets a 4.2 kW electric motor that offers 18Nm of torque. It has two swappable lithium-ion battery packs under the seat. Since the 2018 Auto Expo Honda has been working hard on its electric mobility platform and recently unveiled the Benly E electric delivery scooters in Japan. Once electric infrastructure is in place, we can expect big manufacturers like Honda to get their electric products here.
