There’s a bit more to the Z500 than just a bigger engine, and here’s a clear explanation of all the differences

    Kawasaki Z400 Vs Z500

The Kawasaki Z400 was a capable middleweight streetfighter, but Kawasaki had to do something to make it an even better value-for-money proposition. Hence, the brand launched its replacement, the Kawasaki Z500 in 2024. As you might’ve guessed from the name, yes, it does have a bigger engine, but the changes don’t just stop there. We explain the differences in detail:

    What's Different

    Engine & Gearbox

    Kawasaki Z400 Vs Z500 Engine

    Specification

    Kawasaki Z400

    Kawasaki Z500

    Engine Type

    Liquid-cooled, parallel-twin, DOHC

    Liquid-cooled, parallel-twin, DOHC

    Displacement

    399cc

    451cc

    Bore x Stroke

    70.0 x 51.8 mm

    70.0 x 58.6 mm

    Compression Ratio

    11.5:1

    11.3:1

    Max Power

    48 PS @ 10,000 rpm

    45 PS @ 9,000 rpm

    Max Torque

    37.0 Nm @ 8,000 rpm

    42.6.0 Nm @ 6,000 rpm

Kawasaki has gone with a longer stroke on the Z500 rather than a bigger bore, and that shows up in the numbers too. The Z500 is torquier than the Z400, and that should result in better low-end grunt, especially considering the fact that it makes its peak torque at 2000rpm lower. Kawasaki has also made several changes to the engine internals, including the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, revised air intake and compression ratio, among others. All these changes should make it a bit more fun to ride. Also, the final reduction ratio is slightly more than the Z400, which means it will have slightly higher top speed at the expense of acceleration. That said, the extra torque coming in from the bigger engine should compensate for this, so it shouldn’t feel lethargic.

    Features & Design

    Kawasaki Z400 Vs Z500 Console

Here’s where the Z500 feels a bit more modern (but not too modern). The Z400 had a semi-digital console, whereas the Z500 has a full LCD. Also, Kawasaki added basic connectivity such as call and SMS alerts, last parked location, among others. There’s still no navigation, not even turn-by-turn navigation. Since that’s the most important feature, we’d rather take the Z400’s console instead. At least that one looks cool with the analogue tachometer.

While the overall sharp streetfighter styling has remained the same on the Z500, it gets a redesigned headlight and tail light, along with slightly tweaked tank extensions and tail panels. Also, the Z500 gets a new seat for better comfort.

    What's The Same

The underpinnings on the Z500 and Z400 are pretty much the same: a 41mm front fork, a trellis frame, a linked monoshock, dual-channel ABS, and 17-inch alloys. They somehow even weigh the exact same (167 kg) and share identical seat heights (785 mm) and ground clearance (145 mm).

Kawasaki Z400 Vs Z500 Side By Side

Summing up, the Z500 is more of a quality-of-life tweak rather than a generational update. We wish Kawasaki had given it riding aids, as currently it has none. Also, the bike could do with a more premium-looking inverted fork, and perhaps a TFT console with better connectivity. This is especially considering the fact that many motorcycles that are much more affordable come with all these goodies.
