Hero Splendor Plus Xtec vs TVS Star City Plus: 2 Good 100cc Bikes!

The TVS Star City Plus has been quite an underrated bike in the 100cc segment. It’s quite a nice bike to ride but sometimes we feel it’s not talked about enough. So today we thought about putting it up against the best bike in this segment, the Hero Splendor Plus Xtec, and see how that battle goes. 

Price & Variants

• The TVS Star City Plus kicks things off with quite a positive in the form of its price. The difference between the base variants is almost Rs 9,000 and it’s the same with the drum trims as well. 

• That sort of money is significant in this segment, for it could very well take care of your fuel expenses for a good 6-7 months, at the very least. 

• And that also shows that the Splendor Plus Xtec, with its features, has become a slightly more expensive bike, while the Star City Plus has stayed true to its more old-school, affordable genes. More about that later though. For now, the TVS bike has won this segment. 

Dimensions & Design 

• Ignore what the spec sheets say, for both the Splendor Plus Xtec and the Star City Plus are quite similar in being accessible and easy to ride motorcycles, with low kerb weights, feeling narrow between your legs, having low seat heights and essentially feeling very light to ride around. 

• Where the Star City Plus stands out is with its design. The slightly more modern looking LED headlight, sportier alloys and more nicer colours make it stand out a bit more than the Splendor and that’s something that the younger folks of the house will love. 

• And TVS has done that without making the Star City look outrageous. So it’s essentially modern enough for the younger riders while still retaining that simple commuter look. 

Features & Safety

• Talking about old-school, the Splendor Plus is anything but old-school. Justifying the Xtec badge are the endless list of features which include a fully digital console and Bluetooth connectivity, among others. 

• But then the Star City plus keeps things simple with the semi-digital console and no connectivity whatsoever. And that’s understandable since these bikes will be ridden by everyone in the family and the older generations often prefer reading analogue consoles. 

• While we’re not exactly mad that the Star City Plus doesn’t have a lot of features, this segment is definitely won by the Splendor Plus Xtec. 

Engines

• The Star City Plus makes more power and torque, both at lower revs than the Splendor. So it’s natural that it’ll feel like the slightly more peppy bike of the two. 

• It’s a minute difference, mind you, and it’s not that both bikes feel wildly different in terms of their engines. But if you have a pillion or maybe some luggage on, you might feel the difference in how grunty they are. 

• These things said, both engines will feel nice in the city and they’ll also return excellent mileage figures. If you ride them the way they’re supposed to, you could see more than 80kmpl as well. 

• Out on the highway though, both bikes will start struggling and you will instantly see the mileage numbers drop as well. 

Verdict 

As we mentioned before, these are 2 good 100cc commuters that tick a lot of the boxes that a bike in this segment should. But where the Star City Plus has a bit of an edge, one that might win a lot of people over, is with its price. The price delta between the respective variants is too big to ignore for most prospective buyers. So if you want a bike that’s more bang for your buck, you should probably get the TVS Star City Plus. 

But then if you want something that has more features and feels like the more premium of the two, while being ready to pay more for that, you could think about getting the legendary Hero Splendor Plus Xtec.
