Yamaha FZ-S Fi V4 – A no-nonsense Japanese Commuter
The Yamaha FZ-S Fi V4 is one of the best-selling Yamaha bikes in India. It has a good mileage, a reliable engine, and a fairly affordable price tag. It has had a design update recently, which makes it look rather fresh.

Design
-
The FZ-S Fi V4 gets a very unusual design with a muscular fuel tank, large tank shrouds and a boxy headlight

-
The LED headlight and tank mounted indicators give it a very distinct, aggressive look.

-
The build quality is good with no loose or exposed wires.

-
The bike is offered in seven colour schemes and in my opinion, the Ice-Fluo Vermillion looks elegant and is subtle enough.

-
Along with the colour schemes, the bike also gets coloured wheels for some select colours, that add a nice touch.

Features
-
The bike gets an all-LED lighting setup for excellent visibility during your rides.

-
It is equipped with a negatively-lit LCD instrument console that gives essential information like speed, fuel level, time, tachometer, trip meter and also odometer.

-
Though the bike gets smartphone connectivity with call and SMS alerts, it misses out on turn-by-turn navigation that would have been a good addition to the feature list.

-
The instrument console is easy to read and does the job well but can be a bit hard to read only in direct sunlight.

-
The bike is equipped with a single-channel ABS system that doesn't let the front wheel lockup to prevent skidding making the bike more safe.

-
It also gets a traction control system, unseen in motorcycles in its segment.

Riding Posture & Comfort
-
The handlebars are raised and with slightly rear-set footpegs, the riding position is quite commanding and comfortable.

-
It gets a long single-piece seat that has an easily accessible seat height

-
The seat is accommodating and comfortable for city use and highway rides too.

-
The bike’s seat is well-padded and offers good support to the rider as well as the pillion.

-
The fuel tank also helps you lock your knees firmly for more stable grip on the bike reducing strain from your hands.

-
The bike gets accessible grab rails and makes it very easy for the pillion to grab on to when riding, making the ride much more comfortable and safe.

The FZ-S Fi V4 is very easy to ride in the city with its tractable engine that pulls cleanly.

-
The engine produces enough torque for the bike to pull along in 5th gear at as low as 25kmph.

-
The FZ-S Fi V4 will cruise on the highway at 70kmph without any strain but the highway is not what it's the most comfortable at.

-
The bike does what it is meant to do the best– city commutes and returned a mileage of 70kmpl in the city and 54.33kmpl on the highway in our real-world tests.

-
Also, the clutch is light to operate and the throttle is responsive, giving it a sporty character.

Handling & Ride Quality
-
The FZS Fi V4 gets a telescopic fork and a 7-step adjustable monoshock that absorbs most of the bumps on the road and is very comfortable to ride around.

-
The suspension setup is softer, compromising the handling a bit but will feel good for commutes and highway runs.

-
The bike does feel very nimble and agile due to the excellent chassis and suspension setup.

-
It gets a 282mm front disc and a 220mm rear disc with single-channel ABS as standard that helps in preventing wheel lock-ups when in panic braking situations.

Should you buy the Yamaha FZS Fi V4?
-
This bike is definitely for you if you do a lot of city commutes and it offers a very smooth riding experience.

-
The Yamaha FZ-S Fi V4 comes with a very refined engine, bullet-proof Japanese reliability and also excellent mileage.

-
Also, if you want a very easy to ride bike along with all these features, the FZ-S Fi V4 is the perfect buy for you.

📝Redditors Opinions on Yamaha FZS-FI V4
The Yamaha FZ is widely appreciated for its reliability, mileage, refinement, comfort, and pillion friendliness. Most riders find it excellent for commuting and moderate touring. However, it receives mixed opinions for lacking raw power and features compared to rivals. A few users strongly criticize it as underpowered and overpriced, suggesting alternatives like Apache RTR 160, Hero Xtreme 160R, Pulsar N160, or Suzuki Gixxer.
✅ 9 Positive Opinions:
-
I love how some people are having a meltdown saying, "it isn't Powerful enough"Dude let the man enjoy his machine, not everyone of us goes mach jesus on every highway they ride.I did a 200km ish run from bhubaneswar, konark and puri beach on this very machine with a 70kg pillion. It sticks very well at 70-80 kmph, brakes inspire confidence at all times and thanks to the bike itself being nimble, i was able to avoid stray cows during nighttime. Have fun touring buddy, ride safe :) Says—--FLUX_m3
-
FZ for reliability. Mileage and peace of mind. It's stable on the highways. No failures, no breakdowns even after several 10k kilometres. Engine problems are very rare, it has a time tested engine. It can easily cruise at 80kmph even 90kmph. Trust me you'll not regret buying a Yamaha. I had a sz RR 2.0 for 6 years and 55k kms done. Says —pervysage8787
-
Don't overthink dude, love it live with it, it's not a bad bike at all, and yamaha produces reliable engine, enjoyy it. Says—--gaurav_meena
-
I love fz. I toured in kerala covering kochi, munnar, thekkady, varkala, and alleppey along with pillion on this machine and never faced any issue except for slight back ache. Very reliable machine. Says—--rkrinndl
-
It tours well when your speed requirements are limited. I rode the basic fz for 40k km in coastal Karnataka. Solid bike. Says— tremorinfernus
-
50+ Fuel Efficiency, Lightweight, Amazing Brakes, Comfortable seat and ergos. Refinement is top notch. Says—Ok-Special3797
-
If your first preference is comfort, handling, engine refinement and mileage, then definitely you can go with FZ. The power looks okay to me (coz I'm also not a speedy rider). Test ride once and you'll get to know practically. Also don't blindly follow the spec sheet of any bike. The tuning and power delivery will be different than on-paper. Says—SpectacularMonk_2029
-
Out of the few pillion seats I’ve experienced, Yamaha FZ stood out the most. One of the best seats imo. Says— firebolt286
-
Yamaha Fz comes first, when it comes to Pillion space, the width and length on that seat is more than enough, also it's quite comfortable when it comes to bad roads. Then there are Pulsar 150 and 220, quite spacious pillion seats on both of them, average comfort. The Pulsar NS 200 has a long enough pillion seat but the width is less, not comfortable for long rides, but it's good enough for short rides. Says— iShivamz
⚖️ 3 Mixed Opinions:
-
If you want raw power - don't choose FZ. It's more of an entry-level bike that gives you a look into how premium, reliable, and ever ready bikes are. It's a brilliant 9/10 bike that's fun to drive, good value for money. But there are other bikes if you want just raw power. Says— Anonymous user
-
If you wanna fall in love with motorcycle then go for Gixxer , if you wanna fall in love with riding long rides which is more about the journey and the view and the destination then go with fz . Says— Seksyasnibba_hafiz
-
If you want a bike thats easy to ride, comfortable for city commute for both rider and pillion, ample and responsive low and mid range, and bullet proof reliability, butter smooth engine, go for fz.. If you want to enjoy some weekend rides on highways, occasional tours, punchier engine especially towards top end, sportier egronomics, good enough reliability and enhine refinement but not as much as yamaha, go for apache. Says— nikupinku
❌ 3 Negative Comments:
-
If u want 0-60 and power throughout mid-range then FZ-Fi v3/v4 is not the choice buddy. Its very underpowered.According to youtube drag races, Hero Xtreme 160r 4v is the fastest in 0-60 and Rtr 160 4v is the most powerful in 160cc segment. Note: As a rtr 160 4v owner myself i can confirm that this thing has very good initial and awesome power that kicks in at around 6k rpm. Edit: I have ridden my friend's FZ-Fi 2022 model for about a year and the above was my experience and it also has loose chain issue which was not permanently fixed even from authorised service center or other mechanics. It can be fixed temporarily but comes back within few days. Says —---_un_known_101

If the FZS is a hybrid, then the Jupiter 110 is also a hybrid. See the problem? Why yamaha isn't fined for false advertising when Maruti did the same with the Ciaz some years ago and paid the price... I do not know. Anyway the Yamaha is a strictly city commuter, on the highway it will be underpowered and is really not worth the 1.8 lakhs. I'd pick the RTR 160 4v. Bangalore does have some good TVS service centers from what I've heard. I wouldn't spend the extra on the USDs, the telescopics are pretty good as is. Else I'd go for the N160, a reliable solid bike with no real flaws. If you can stretch your budget you can get the Xtreme 250R or Pulsar N250 or Honda CB300F. Xtreme is the new kid on the block but so far it is very well-rounded. N250 is a solid city commuter with some highway capability, CB300F is a bit more sporty and less comfortable. Says—--Anonymous user
-
My recommendation will be to avoid Fz. It’s only a 150cc bike on paper. It really struggles to do pretty much anything. More in line with a 125cc bike. Although one might like the laid back nature of the fz. Take a test drive. Says—---amritajaatak
