Yamaha Aerox-E Review: Unfinished Prototype
Yamaha’s first self-grown EV is the Aerox-E, and it promises a world of performance.
Romance in Shah Rukh Khan's movies, action in Akshay Kumar's movies, and good songs in Emraan Hashmi's movies are pretty much guaranteed. Similarly, when you hear ‘Aerox’, you know the commute is going to be fast and fun. Its performance has been a benchmark in the scooter segment. And now, it has finally come in an electric avatar. So, can this EV push the performance benchmark of the Aerox 155 further and make it more exciting? Because if that doesn't happen, then what's the point of having an electric Aerox?
Yamaha launched the Aerox-E in India on July 8, 2026.

Design

It looks exactly like the Aerox -- just a new colour variant. And this is done intentionally because Aerox-E is inherently a very sporty-looking scooter. The E comes in a white colour, and you don’t get any other colour options. It gets some green highlights, which hints towards its electric nature. Apart from this, there are some changes in the finish of the panels. You get a new pattern on the headlamp surround and also a different pattern on the seat, which differentiates it from the Aerox 155.
Features And Practicality
Features
The biggest addition in features of the Aerox-e from the petrol-powered Aerox is the TFT console. It is a good screen which gets day and night modes. The day mode is easily legible in sunlight. All important information like boost mode, battery, speed, trip meter, and expected range is clearly visible. You also get a key fob instead of a physical key, and it is very easy to use.

In terms of safety, the Aerox-E also gets traction control, which a few electric scooters get in the country. But first for an EV scooter is ABS, which makes for a good and unique offering in the segment.
Practicality
The Aerox’s underseat storage was one of the best in the segment. That is not the case here. Why? Because you get two removable batteries. Each battery weighs 14kg and slides into the boot. Because of this, you don’t get enough space to store a helmet. A small helmet might fit, but a proper full-face helmet won’t. A laptop bag will also fit with difficulty. You can still manage groceries, but overall, practicality has reduced in the electric version.

At the front, where the fuel filler cap used to be, there is now space to keep the charger so it won’t occupy under-seat space. A front glove box is still available, and you also get a charging port for your phone. However, overall practicality has reduced compared to the petrol version.

Rider And Pillion Comfort

The riding posture is also very similar. My height is 5 feet 7 inches, and I can easily flat-foot it from the saddle. However, the seat height has gone up a bit, but it makes very little difference. The riding posture is sporty and makes it fun to ride, at least from a posture point of view. Apart from this, you also get a big seat for the pillion. The grab rails are large and comfortable to hold. So overall, there is no issue with rider and pillion comfort.
Motor, Battery, Range & Performance
Performance
As I mentioned earlier, if there is no performance in an Aerox, then what is the point? And sadly, that is the case here. While riding, it doesn’t feel like this scooter is made for performance. You get three ride modes: Eco, Standard and Power. Eco mode is very basic and only to be used to get home in a very low charge state. The standard mode also doesn’t feel exciting—the throttle feels sluggish, and the scooter is slow. You even need to put effort into overtaking regular moving traffic.

In power mode, acceleration improves. But even then, other sporty scooters in the market, like the Ather 450 Apex or models from Simple Energy, offer much better performance. Compared to them, this feels dull and sluggish. However, there is a small trick—boost mode. When you need instant performance, you can press a button on the left switchgear to activate it. It works for exactly 10 seconds, and during that time, performance improves significantly. Overtakes become easier, and uphill climbs feel better. But then it takes around a minute to recover. You cannot even use it in short bursts. Once used, even for a second, you will have to wait for a minute before using it again. The boost mode performance should have been standard on the Aerox-E.
Without boost mode, the overall performance feels dull, which is unacceptable for an Aerox. People buy an Aerox for motorcycle-like performance in a scooter package. If it doesn’t deliver that, then what is even the point?

Range and Charge Time
You get two removable batteries with a total capacity of 3kWh. Compared to Yamaha’s other scooter (EC-06) with a 3.9kWh battery, this is smaller. In real-world conditions, expect a range of around 60-70km. If you ride aggressively, it can drop to around 50km. So this is something to keep in mind—it is not impressive. Charging time varies between 4-6 hours, which is decent. But since the battery is small, we expected faster charging. If you want to take the batteries home and charge then, you will have to purchase an additional home charging dock, which costs Rs 18,000.
In today’s time, a real-world range of 100km is expected. Its 60km range is definitely not acceptable.

Handling & Ride Quality
The latest Aerox in India had improved suspension, making it softer and better at absorbing bumps without compromising handling. That setup is missing here. Due to the added weight, the suspension feels unbalanced. On bad roads, the front absorbs well, but the rest keeps tossing you up. And there is a noticeable rattling noise from the removable batteries under the seat. Once again, it feels like a prototype rather than a finished product.

Handling is still impressive. It leans and corners like a motorcycle. But without strong performance, the fun factor is reduced. Even on uphill roads, the scooter struggles to maintain speed in power mode. You need boost mode just to keep up. It works like an overtake mode in Formula 1—good while active, but performance drops immediately after.

Verdict
The Aerox E is a tricky scooter to review. Yes, it looks like an Aerox, but its practicality is lower than the petrol version. Its real-world range is poor. Charging time is decent but should have been faster. Performance is disappointing—it doesn’t feel like an Aerox at all. Handling is good, but comfort is lacking again.

What makes the Yamaha Aerox-E a straight up write-off is its price tag: Rs 2,81,600 (ex-showroom Delhi). Let that sink in—a scooter with less practicality, less performance, less comfort, and less range costs double compared to the petrol version. Yamaha needs to rework a lot of the aspects of the Aerox E to make it fit for the market.
