Yamaha is all set to launch an adventure-themed motorcycle based on the Yamaha FZ-S FI V3.0. It will be called the Yamaha FZ-X. The bike has been approved by the NCR RTO, so it is likely to be launched in May or June.
The FZ-X will likely have rugged aesthetics but it may not be a properly off-road-friendly ADV. At 2,020mm, the overall length is 30mm more than the streetfighter. Its width and height are 785mm and 1,115mm respectively, making it 5mm wider and 35mm taller than the FZ-S. These differences could be due to the bike having a beak-like front fender, knuckle guards, and perhaps a windshield. It could also come with gaitered front forks, a bash plate, and a more rugged-looking engine guard for a butch appearance.
The bike uses the same engine as the FZ-S. This 149cc single-cylinder air-cooled, fuel-injected motor churns out the same power as the naked (12.4PS at 7,250rpm). So expect the torque output to remain the same as well. In the FZ-S, the motor produces 13.3Nm at 5500rpm. The engine will be mated to a 5-speed transmission.
The gross vehicle weight stands at 289kg, but expect the kerb weight to be around 139kg, 4kg more than the FZ-S. The 1,330mm wheelbase is still the same, so it is likely the wheels will still be 17-inch alloy units at both ends, possibly wrapped in block-pattern tyres.

The upcoming Yamaha FZ-X could command a premium of around Rs 5,000-Rs 6,000 over the FZ-S, which retails at Rs 1,08,200 (ex-showroom Delhi). It will not have any natural rivals when it is launched, but the Hero XPulse 200 comes pretty close. That said, the latter is a properly off-road-friendly motorcycle, priced at 1,18,230 (ex-showroom Delhi). If the FZ-X indeed turns out to be just a butch-looking bike, we’d be disappointed as we are expecting Yamaha to bring out a proper off-road-friendly motorcycle, perhaps something like the XTZ-250 Lander a 250cc ADV variant of the Yamaha FZ25.
