Aimed at budding enduro racers, this mini-moto is being brought to India as a CBU

Suzuki DR-Z50 launched

  • The DR-Z50 is a mini-moto bike aimed at kids wanting to get into racing.
  • It is a small bike with a low 560mm seat height and weighs just 54kg.
  • The bike is powered by an air-cooled 49cc single-cylinder motor mated to a 3-speed gearbox with auto clutch.
  • Pricing is Rs 2.55 lakh (ex-Delhi), due to it being brought to India via the CBU route.

Like Kawasaki, Suzuki is taking the dirt bike racing scene in India seriously as well. They had previously launched the RM-Z250 and RM-Z450 dirt bikes at Rs 7.1 lakh and Rs 8.31 lakh (both ex-Delhi) respectively. While those were aimed at the more serious off-road rider, the DR-Z50 is for young and budding racers who want to learn the sport.

For one, it is quite small. The DR-Z50 weighs a scant 54kg (kerb) and has a low 560mm seat height. It has 10-inch wheels and a small 3-litre fuel tank. However, the bike gets credible off-road bits in the form of long-travel upside down front forks and rear monoshock and spoke wheels fitted with tubed off-road knobby tyres. Braking is via drum brakes at both ends.

Power is via a tiny 49cc air-cooled and carburetted single-cylinder motor. While power output is not specified, performance should be sprightly considering the low kerb weight. The bike gets an electric starter as well as a kick lever. Transmission is via a three-speed gearbox with an automatic clutch so all you have to do its slot the bike in gear and accelerate, like a geared ATV.

Suzuki is getting the DR-Z50 to India via the CBU route, that's why the premium pricing. While it does not have a direct competitor, the closest one is the Kawasaki KLX 110 that is a bit larger, weighs 76kg and costs Rs 2.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
