EV makers will have to comply with the new rules for production-based incentives

To ensure the safety of electric two-wheelers, due to the fires in the past, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has announced a new list of mandatory safety tests for EVs. To that end, it shall give incentives to the manufacturers, based on the score they achieve in the various tests.

The new safety provision tests will take place on three levels – six tests of the cell, 10 tests of the battery management system and five tests at the battery level. These checks will ensure that the cell structure and the batteries work well in Indian conditions.

What’s interesting is that these provisions are not under the Motor Vehicle Act, but only implemented on the PLI schemes for automobile and auto components, Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) and FAME II schemes. So technically, EV makers will only have to go through these comprehensive tests to get the production-based incentives.

However, electric two-wheelers are expensive to manufacture and come bearing a hefty price tag, and the schemes are what make them more affordable and attractive. So to continue enjoying the increasing electric two-wheeler sales and increase the overall safety of the batteries, EV makers are more likely to comply with the new safety norms.
