Honda CB500 vs Harley-Davidson X440: Price Comparison

Honda has recently launched the CB500 in India at a starting price of Rs 2,75,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Japanese retro bike goes up against the Harley-Davidson X440. Here’s a detailed price comparison between the two bikes:

The CB500 is more expensive than the X440 across its variants. The base alloy variant of the CB500 is Rs 40,000 more expensive than the base Vivid variant of the X440, while the price difference between the top variants is Rs 15,900.

Honda CB 500

The Honda CB500 gets a design similar to its smaller sibling, the CB350. It gets a circular LED headlight, a muscular fuel tank, a brushed-aluminium finish on the engine casing, along with a ribbed single-piece seat and a large upswept exhaust. The bike is available with spoke and alloy wheel options.

The bike is available in five colours in total. The Alloy variant gets two colours: Pearl Deep Ground Grey & Pearl Igneous Black. The mid variant with spoke wheels is available in Matte Steel Silver Metallic & Rebel Red Metallic 2. The top variant comes in Pearl Igneous Black with golden stripes.

It is powered by a 501cc air/oil-cooled single-cylinder engine that makes 28.1 PS and 43.5 Nm, paired with a 5-speed gearbox. We expect the engine to have good low- to mid-range torque and be easy to ride in the city and out on the highway.

It gets a semi-digital instrument console with an analogue speedometer and a digital insert that displays essential information such as the fuel gauge, gear position indicator, and odometer. The bike also gets Bluetooth connectivity, music and call controls, along with turn-by-turn navigation via the Honda RoadSync app. In terms of safety features, the bike gets dual-channel ABS, a hazard light switch, and switchable traction control.

Harley-Davidson X440

The Harley-Davidson X440 gets sportier styling compared to the CB 500. It gets a large sculpted tank, a single-piece seat and a wide handlebar. The X440 T variant also gets a slightly redesigned tail section and a lowered handlebar position for a sportier riding stance.

It is available in 10 colours in total across its three variants. The X440 Vivid gets four colours: Metallic Thick Red, Metallic Dark Silver, Mustard & Goldfish Silver. The X440 S is available in two colours: Matte Black & Baja Orange, while the X440 T is available in four colours: Vivid Black, Pearl Red, Pearl White & Pearl Blue.

The bike is powered by a 440 cc single-cylinder, air/oil-cooled engine that makes 27 PS and 38 Nm, which is 1.1 PS and 5.5 Nm less than the CB 500. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. It gets two ride modes, Road and Rain, with the Road mode offering better throttle response, while the Rain mode has a more linear power delivery. The rear ABS can be turned off in Road mode, while the ABS stays permanently on in Rain mode for added safety.

In terms of features, the bike gets a 3.5-inch TFT console with Bluetooth connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, and call/SMS alerts. It also gets a tachometer, which the CB500 misses, along with a fuel gauge, trip meters, and an odometer. In terms of safety features, the X440 gets switchable ABS and traction control as standard.

The Honda CB 500 gets a bigger engine with significantly more torque than the Harley X440. However, it only comes with a 5-speed gearbox and misses out on a modern TFT console, instead opting for a more retro-looking semi-digital one. Overall, the CB 500 is a motorcycle that prioritises retro looks and laid-back riding.

The Harley X440, on the other hand, is a more modern-looking motorcycle with more features than the CB500. It also gets a large single-cylinder engine, while being significantly more affordable. 

If you want more power and more authentic retro looks, the CB 500 is worth considering, but if you want a more modern look with more features, the Harley X440 is the one to go for.
