Hero Xtreme 160R 4V vs TVS Apache RTR 160 4V: Which Streetfighter Is Better?

The recently launched Hero Xtreme 160R 4V goes up against the feature-packed TVS Apache RTR 160 4V. Both bikes are similarly priced, and here we have a detailed comparison to find out the bike with better specifications. 

Engine

The TVS Apache RTR 160 4V’s engine produces more power and torque, and also gets 3 riding modes. They include: Sport, Urban and Rain, and each modulates the level of power and ABS intervention. The Sport mode offers the engine’s full power of 17.55PS and 14.73Nm, with minimal ABS intervention. The Urban and Rain modes dial down the power to 15.64PS and 14.14Nm, with higher ABS intervention. This adds a level of versatility to the bike, and makes it easy for riders to fine tune the performance according to their preference.

The Hero Xtreme 160R 4V, on the other hand, has a slightly larger engine which produces its peak power and torque slightly lower in the rev range. The engine should have slightly better initial torque which would make it more engaging to ride in the city. The bike also gets riding modes, but it's only to modulate the level of throttle response.

Underpinnings

The Hero Xtreme 160R 4V has the edge here, with its 7-step preload adjustable monoshock, giving riders the option to set the rear suspension to their weight. The larger front tyre on the Xtreme should also help in improving stability especially while braking. The Apache RTR 160 4V does not lag behind. It does get a slightly larger rear disc brake, but the difference it makes is not that great.

Dimensions

The Xtreme 160R 4V should have slightly sportier handling thanks to the smaller wheelbase. The Apache RTR 160 4V, with its longer wheelbase could feel much more stable at higher speeds. It also has a higher ground clearance, which should make it easier to handle bad patches of road. Seat height on both bikes are relatively similar, and both will be accessible for riders of all heights.

Features

Although both bikes are feature packed, we think the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V gives a more premium experience with the TFT console. The Hero Xtreme 160R 4V does get some novel additions like the cruise control system. That said, most Indian highways are packed with traffic, and riders will have to slow down or modulate their speeds constantly. So instances where the system can be fully used will be limited. 

Price & Verdict

The price difference between the two models comes to Rs 1,780. For this premium, the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V has more performance and practical features, along with a more premium feel. What we liked the most was the addition of the traction control system, which will be quite useful for beginner riders.

The Hero Xtreme 160R 4V Cruise Control Variant is a decent proposition, but we feel that the bike isn’t able to match the same kind of value for money that the Apache does. It is still a good bike with some quirky features like the cruise control system. The Xtreme 160R 4V Combat Edition is geared more towards die-hard Hero fans, and others whose daily commutes involve uninterrupted stretches of highway riding.
