Royal Enfield has finally launched the much-awaited Himalayan 440 in India. The new adventure motorcycle is based on the Royal Enfield Scram 440, and carries the same rugged character as the original Himalayan. The design is slightly modern, it gets a larger 443cc engine, and some necessary features. 

How Much Does It Cost?

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 440 has been launched at a starting price of Rs 2.29 lakh (ex-showroom). This makes it a whopping Rs 79,000 more affordable than the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, while being Rs 5,000 more expensive than the lower variant of the Scram 440, and about Rs 3,400 affordable than its top variant.

The Himalayan 440 is powered by the same 443cc single-cylinder engine as the Scram 440. The engine produces 25.4PS and 34Nm, and comes paired with a 6-speed gearbox.

The motor is tuned more towards usable low- and mid-range performance rather than outright speed, which should suit the Himalayan 440’s adventure-focused character. It should also make the motorcycle capable of handling everyday commuting as well as highway touring and light off-road riding. While the 6-speed gearbox should give it better highway performance.

Underpinnings

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 440 gets a conventional telescopic fork and a rear monoshock. It rides on a 21-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear wheel spoke wheel setup with tubed tyres, giving it the right proportions for an adventure motorcycle. It gets long-travel suspension at both ends with 200 mm front and 180 mm rear wheel travel.

Braking duties are handled by disc brakes at both ends, while dual channel ABS is offered as standard. The motorcycle also gets a 90-section front and a 120-section rear dual purpose tyres, which should help it tackle broken roads and mild trails with confidence.
