Budget 2025: Import Duty on Premium Bikes Reduced – What It Means for Buyers

The government of India has slashed import duty on premium bikes, including complete built units (CBUs) along with semi-knocked down (SKD) and completely knocked down (CKD) units

If you are planning to buy a new superbike, this might be the best time to get your hands on a new imported one. This is because the Government of India has reduced the import duty on motorcycles in Budget 2025. 

In the latest budget for the 2025 financial year, the Government of India has announced a significant reduction in import duties for two-wheelers: 

• The import duties on CBUs (Completely Built Units) have been reduced from 50 percent to 40 percent

• Furthermore, there is also a reduction of import duty on Semi-Knocked Down (SKD) bikes by 5 percent, from 25 percent to 20 percent

• Completely Knocked Down (CKD) units now have reduced import duty, dropping from 15 percent to 10 percent, resulting in a 5 percent decrease

• Moreover, the highest reduction in import duty is for bikes above 1,600cc. The import duty has been reduced by 20 percent, from 50 percent to 30 percent.

Here’s what it means for the customers

These reductions in import duties by the finance ministry should make buying premium and imported bikes including CBUs, SKDs, and CKDs significantly cheaper than before. This should translate to lower ex-showroom costs, making these bikes more affordable for the customers. 

However, buyers of bikes with engine capacities of 1,600cc and above will get the most out of this budget as they get the highest reduction of 20 percent on import duty. This means that bikes like the BMW R 18 Transcontinental, Triumph Rocket 3, Harley Davidson Street Glide and the Harley Davidson Fat Bob should be way more affordable than before.
