Yamaha R15 V4: Explained In Images

The R15 is one of the best faired bikes that you can buy on a budget in India. Before buying one, here’s all you need to know frame-by-frame

Yamaha R15 is one of the most popular budget supersport bikes in India.   Priced from Rs 1,73,050 (ex-showroom Delhi), this bike offers good value for money for those looking for an accessible supersport machine. Here's what the details reveal about its design, performance, and technology.

Design

The design is heavily inspired by Yamaha's larger R-series supersports, giving it a genuine big-bike look. The full fairing is sharp and aerodynamic, dominated by a central bi-functional LED projector headlamp flanked by sleek LED DRLs. That said, we do miss the proper split headlight design of the older generation bike. The sculpted 11-litre fuel tank features deep knee recesses, allowing the rider to grip the bike securely while cornering. The rear is properly slender with an upswept exhaust, high-set pillion seat complemented by a sleek tail lamp.

Details

  • The bike features deep glossy paint, sturdy plastics with tight panel gaps, and premium switchgear, reflecting Yamaha's reputation for high-quality construction.

  • A combination of low-set clip-on handlebars and rear-set footpegs results in a focused, track-oriented riding posture. Our experts note that this aggressive posture can feel a little cramped for taller riders.

  • The pillion seat is small, high-set, and not very cushioned, which makes it impractical for long rides with a passenger.

  • The top-spec M variant stands apart with a Carbon Fibre Pattern panel finish, a unique 3D logo badge, and a distinctive golden-coloured brake caliper, along with a TFT connected console, and a standard quickshifter (upshifts only).

Colours

Yamaha offers a wide palette for the R15 V4, catering to various tastes. Full details of the R15 colours here

Details

  • With these colour options, buyers can choose from everyday colours to premium, motorsport-themed graphics.

  • The on-road price of the R15 V4 changes based on the selected colours, with the top-tier options being the most expensive.

  • The R15M gets unique, more premium paint schemes like Metallic Grey and Icon Performance.

Engine and Performance

At the heart of the R15 V4 is a 155cc, liquid-cooled, 4-valve engine. It produces 18.4 PS of power at 10,000 rpm and 14.2 Nm of torque at 7,500 rpm. The key technology here is Yamaha's VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) system. It switches between two different cam profiles at around 7,400 rpm, providing strong torque for city riding at lower revs and an eager power rush at the top end. In our opinion this dual-character performance is one of the engine's best qualities.

Details

  • Thanks to VVA tech, city commutes feel effortless, while also having enough grunt higher in the rev-range.

  • The smooth, slick-shifting 6-speed gearbox is complemented by an Assist & Slipper clutch, making gear changes easier and safer under hard braking.

  • The aggressive posture for touring may become tiring over time, but the bike itself has the performance and stability to handle it.

  • In our tests we were able to get a mileage of around 55kmpl. So despite its sporty character, the R15 V4 delivers incredible mileage!

Features

The R15 V4 is well-equipped for its segment. The standard variant features a full-LCD instrument cluster with Bluetooth connectivity through the Y-Connect app, which displays call/SMS alerts and phone battery status.

Details

  • Dual-channel ABS and a Traction Control System are standard on all variants, enhancing safety under hard acceleration or in low-grip situations.

  • The R15M exclusively gets a colour TFT screen with turn-by-turn navigation and a quickshifter for clutchless upshifts which is rare in this class. Note that select colour variants of the standard R15 V4 also get the quickshifter.

Underpinnings and Specifications

The R15 V4's handling is one of its strongest suits, thanks to its race-proven Deltabox frame. The suspension setup includes a 37mm upside-down (USD) front fork and a linked-type monoshock at the rear. This setup is tuned on the firmer side for sharp handling, though it can feel stiff on poorly maintained city roads. It has a 282mm disc at the front and a 220mm disc at the rear, governed by dual-channel ABS. The bike rides on 17-inch tubeless tyres, with a wide 140/70-17 section tyre at the rear adding to its sporty stance and grip levels.

Details

  • With a low kerb weight of just 141 kg and a compact wheelbase, the R15 V4 is extremely agile and easy to manoeuvre in traffic and through corners.

  • It is ideal for those who want a beginner bike for the race track to start off on and hone your skills.

  • The MRF tyres offer decent grip. Under hard braking, we feel the initial bite up front could’ve been a bit better.

The Yamaha R15 V4 continues to be a benchmark in the 150-160cc supersport segment. It combines aggressive, big-bike design with a rev-happy engine and a healthy list of features. However, buyers should consider the fact that the aggressive riding posture may not be comfortable for long durations; and the limited pillion comfort. But then again, the bike is designed to be a sporty, fun machine, not a boring, practical commuter.

Neat condition bike with awesome road presence

This bike is very good while daily riding is the main factor as the mileage is very good like 43 kmpl in city traffic and the maintenance cost is very low if you ride the bike properly. Also the road presence particularly of this edition is great. If you wish to look good while getting an optimum performance then you can definitely go for it. In my case this bike is in neat condition without any damages or missing parts. All the services done on time and so the warranty is valid.Read More

I had a brother who likes riding this old r15 and I was small and didn't knew any super bikes at all, and this was my first super bike which had all sharpnes at edges, the colour, the speed, it had some personality. Its been amazing bike so far, smooth, light weight. Its top speed is pretty good. It gives good mileage. It is very nice for long rides. Performance of the bike is so good. Suspensions works very well on road. Yes, for sure but take my opinion and explore different bike, It may have something that this bike wouldn't have that charm but you can go for it, if you want sporty look and a good racing bike. Its nice.Read More

r15 V4 Review

The r15 v4 has the old punch while handling the BS6 engine with good aerodynamics and aggressive seating position. Its very easy to reach 140+ with default setting while it was not made for the long drive push, we can try the limits where I've driven around 25,000km in the same bike as well. I love it as my soul.Read More
