Hero manages to clinch onto its first position, but registers only a marginal YoY growth. Right time for other companies to catch up? Let’s find out

With surprise to no one, Hero maintains its top position but records only a marginal growth. Japanese bikemaker Suzuki, on the other hand, records its highest YoY growth. Here’s how motorcycle manufacturers in India have fared in the month of August.

Hero MotoCorp

No points for guessing who was leading the charts in terms of sales. Hero MotoCorp maintained its dominance over the market by selling 6,85,047 units in the last month alone. However, when compared to last year, this growth amounts to just a marginal 0.9 per cent. With products like the Xpulse, Maestro Edge 125 and Destini 125 in the pipeline, we can see this number climbing up easily.

Royal Enfield

Chennai-based manufacturer Royal Enfield posted a growth of 2 per cent compared to the same period last year. The company sold a total of 69,337 motorcycles, including the limited Classic 500 Pegasus Edition. With the launch of the Classic 350 ABS Signals Edition, we only expect that number to go up.

Suzuki Motorcycles

The Japanese bikemaker recorded its highest ever monthly domestic sales this month by selling 62,446 units. To put things into perspective, this is a whopping 41 per cent YoY growth. The company's officials have credited this remarkable growth to its new scooter flagship, the Burgman Street 125, which alone has contributed to more than 55,000 units last month. Suzuki Motorcycle India is targeting an annual sale of 7,00,000 units for FY 2018-19.

TVS Motor Company

Hosur-based giant TVS Motor registered a YoY growth of 7 per cent, with sales figures reaching the 330,076 units mark. Out of these, scooters alone have contributed 126,676 units in the month of August. This can be contributed to the popularity of the TVS NTorq, which has started to dominate the 125cc scooter segment in India.

Bajaj Auto

Bajaj Auto reported a whopping 30 per cent YoY growth last month. The Chakan-based company sold 4,37,092 units last month alone, clocking its highest monthly sales record. In the two-wheeler segment alone, over 2,18,437 units were sold in August this year, as compared to 1,71,664 units in August last year. While the company hasn't launched a new product in a while, its Pulsar series and its fleet of commuter bikes still enjoy healthy popularity in the mass market.
