TVS Apache RTR 160: Pros, Cons & Should You Buy One?

Here’s a look at what works in favour of the Apache RTR 160 and what doesn’t

The TVS Apache RTR 160 is currently the brand's entry-level, performance-oriented commuter motorcycle which replaced the original Apache 150. Over the years, the bike has received a couple of cosmetic and mechanical updates to keep it relevant and it currently retails at Rs 85,573 (ABS front disc variant). That said, does it still make a strong case for itself in a competitive motorcycle market like India? Here’s a look at what works in favour of the bike and what doesn’t. 

Pros:

Race Tuned Chassis:

The TVS Apache RTR 160 gets a race-tuned chassis that offers enough flex to tip into corners while being rigid enough to provide straight line stability. 

Powerful engine:

With a 159.7cc, single-cylinder, carburetted motor under its belt, the Apache RTR 160 is capable of dishing out 15.12PS and 13.03Nm of peak torque. This gives it enough punch to surge past its competition like the Bajaj Pulsar 150, Hero Xtreme Sports and the Honda X-Blade. However, the engine still employs a two-valve setup in order to keep costs in check and target a wider audience in the commuter segment.

Cons:

Dated design:

While the RTR 160 still has some road presence compared to its rivals, the design feels a bit dated now. So if the RTR 160’s design doesn’t appeal to you, then splurge a little extra and go for the newer Apache RTR 160 4V instead, which looks a whole lot better and gets more goodies too. 

Too sharp in mannerisms:

The Apache RTR 160’s race-tuned chassis pays in dividends for weekend thrills. However, it's sharp handling maybe a bit too much for everyday usage and could be a bit too hairy for novice riders.

Unrefined motor:

The bike’s 159.7cc engine is quite unrefined compared to its rivals. This prevents you from really enjoying the performance the bike has to offer. 

Should you buy one?

It's highly unlikely that TVS will continue producing the Apache RTR 160 in India once BS6 emission regulations kick in. Hence, it isn't advisable to go for a bike that'll soon be pulled off the shelf. Instead, you could opt for a newer, more powerful bike from TVS' lineup itself. Like the Apache 160 RTR 4V, for instance.

While the RTR 160 has enough power on tap, it simply fails to impress you with the way it delivers its power. Plus, it lacks the sophistication the current crop of 160cc bikes have to offer.
