The all new Yamaha R2 is packed with a whole bunch of fancier features than the R15, and here’s the full low-down:

    Yamaha YZF-R2

Yamaha has launched the new R2, a 200cc supersport that slots above the Yamaha R15 V4. This has been designed and developed in India, targeted at enthusiasts who want something that’s a bit more premium than a 150cc bike, but also isn’t as expensive as a 300+cc motorcycle. The Yamaha YZF-R2 is loaded with quite a few features that even its rival, the KTM RC200 misses out on. The bike is priced from Rs 2,30,500 to Rs 2,53,000 (ex-showroom Delhi). It arrives in three distinct variants, each offering a different level of equipment.

    Adds bi-directional quickshifter, body-coloured alloys

    YZF-R2M (top)

    Rs 2,53,000

Adjustable suspension, adjustable levers, Smart Key, more premium aesthetic finishes

    Convenience Features

    Yamaha YZF-R2 TFT Console

All variants are fitted with a 5-inch full-colour TFT display with turn-by-turn navigation. There’s also a basic call/SMS connectivity suite, along with an analogue-like tachometer, speedometer, fuel level, odometer, trip meter, gear position indicator, clock, riding mode indicator, and even a lap timer and an average mileage indicator.

The top-spec YZF-R2M variant pushes the premium feel further by including a Smart Key System for keyless operation. Other key features across all variants include an all-LED lighting with a projector headlight, and four riding modes: Street, Sport, Rain, and an extra Custom mode to set your own preferences.

The bidirectional quickshifter allows you to shift both up and down without using the clutch for easier and quicker shifts. But this is standard only on the mid-spec and top-end variants. All versions get adjustable rider footpegs, whereas the adjustable brake and clutch levers are reserved for the R2 M variant only. These levers will help in adjusting the reach based on the riders’ hands.

    Yamaha R2 Front Adjustable Suspension

Also, the R2 M variant gets preload-adjustable front and rear suspension, so that you can tune the behaviour of the suspension based on the terrain and your weight accordingly, for the best handling.

    Safety Features

    Yamaha R2 Front Disc Brake

The YZF-R2's standard safety package across all variants include a dual-channel ABS, traction control system, and assist and slipper clutch. Traction control should be handy when riding in heavy rain. With assist and slipper clutch, the clutch lever effort should be easy, and it should also help in maintaining control while downshifting hard by letting the rear wheel slip instead of locking up.

Radial tyres offer greater cornering confidence when compared to conventional tyres, but just like the R15, the R2 also gets radial only at the rear. Yamaha should’ve provided radials at both ends at least on the M variant.

    BikeDekho Says

While the overall feature set looks pretty healthy, you can also enhance the convenience a bit further by adding a USB charging port with smartphone holder - both of which are offered as part of the official accessories. Tank grips are also available as an accessory, but we feel they should’ve been standard on the M variant. At least in place of the standard faux suede seat cover on the M.
