Honda’s first attempt in the Indian electric scooter market did not go as planned. The Honda Activa e: and Honda QC1 struggled to attract buyers, resulting in slow sales, and an eventual halt in production. While both scooters carried the trust of the Japanese brand, they suffered from multiple shortcomings that made them hard to recommend against well-rounded rivals from TVS, Bajaj, Ather and Vida. Issues related to pricing, range, charging convenience, and practicality meant Honda was unable to make a strong impact in a rapidly evolving EV space.
However, Honda is now gearing up for a more focused re-entry into the Indian electric two-wheeler segment. The Japanese manufacturer is working on an all-new electric scooter that is expected to address the flaws of the earlier e-scooter. This upcoming model will be built on Honda’s new J1H platform and is likely to debut in India by the end of this year. Alongside this, Honda is also developing another electric scooter platform that will primarily cater to international markets, with plans stretching into 2027 and beyond.
The new India-specific electric scooter is expected to be a more practical and competitive product overall. Honda is likely to offer a better, more usable underseat storage, making it better for daily commuting. Home charging capability is also expected to be standard, eliminating one of the biggest pain points of the Activa e:.
