Ather’s New Partnership Will Provide A Peace Of Mind To Owners
Own a first-gen Ather scooter? Worry not!
As electric vehicles become more common, dealing with used battery packs is becoming just as important as building new ones. To address this exact issue, Ather Energy has now partnered with Bengaluru-based LICO Materials to ensure that batteries reaching the end of their service life are either recycled responsibly or used in second-life applications.
Under the partnership, battery packs from Ather scooters will be sent to LICO's recycling facility in Karnataka. If a battery still has enough usable life left, it can be repurposed for less demanding applications. Otherwise, it will be dismantled to recover valuable materials such as lithium, nickel and cobalt, which can then be fed back into the domestic battery supply chain.
Batteries Will Be Collected Through Ather's Service Centres
The initiative covers batteries from both customer-owned Ather scooters and the company's own fleet. Once Ather determines that a battery pack has reached the end of its usable life, it will be sent to LICO through its service centre network. The recycling company will handle collection and transportation while digitally tracking each battery from pickup to processing.
Every Battery Is Checked Before Recycling
Not every battery will head straight to the recycling line. Each pack will first undergo a detailed health check, including parameters such as State of Health (SoH), State of Charge (SoC) and internal resistance. Based on its overall condition, the battery will either be repurposed or recycled to recover raw materials. In other words, there is no fixed battery percentage that automatically marks the end of its life.
According to LICO, its facility can recover up to 95 percent of battery materials, while industry estimates suggest recycled materials could meet over 40 percent of India's lithium, nickel and cobalt demand by 2050.
