Triumph Bonneville T40 vs Royal Enfield Classic 350: Detailed Comparison

Here is how the popular Classic 350 fares against the baby Bonnie

Triumph recently launched the Bonneville T40 retro-roadster in India. In this segment the Royal Enfield Classic 350 has been a strong favourite for years. Both motorcycles follow the classic roadster formula, but they take different approaches. The Classic 350 focuses on traditional styling, relaxed performance and everyday usability, while on-paper, the Bonneville T40 brings Triumph’s premium British design to a smaller-capacity motorcycle.

Design

Starting with the Bonneville T40, the motorcycle takes inspiration from the larger Bonneville family. It gets a classic teardrop-shaped fuel tank, round headlight, chrome mirrors, a peashooter-style exhaust and a clean side profile. Spoked wheels at both ends add to its old-school appeal, while single-tone and dual-colour paint schemes give buyers plenty of choice.

The Royal Enfield Classic 350 follows a similar retro recipe, with a round headlight, teardrop-shaped tank, broad fenders, spoke/alloy wheels and upright stance. However, its design is more traditionally Indian and has remained closely linked to the original Classic identity. The Triumph looks like a smaller Bonneville, while the Royal Enfield has a more unmistakable old-school appearance. The choice here will largely come down to personal preference.

Engine

The Bonneville T40 gets a new 350 cc single-cylinder engine, which is expected to be tuned for a relaxed but stronger performance compared to the Classic 350. The engine on the T40 makes 29 PS, 30.2 Nm and gets a 6-speed gearbox.

The Classic 350 uses Royal Enfield’s 349 cc single-cylinder J-series engine, producing 20.2 PS and 27 Nm. It is paired with a five-speed gearbox and is tuned primarily for smooth, relaxed riding rather than outright performance. On-paper, the Triumph makes a lot more power and torque compared to the Classic, which should result in a significant advantage in acceleration and highway performance. The Classic, however, should continue to offer the more laid-back character that its buyers expect.

Underpinnings

The Bonneville T40 gets a conventional roadster setup with telescopic fork, twin rear shock absorbers and spoke wheels at both ends. Its chassis is designed around easy handling and everyday usability rather than outright sportiness. It rides on an 18-inch front and a 17-inch rear wheel setup. There are disc brakes at both ends with dual channel ABS.

The Classic 350 uses a twin-downtube spine frame, a telescopic fork and twin rear shock absorbers, similar setup as the T40. It rides on a 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel combination, giving it a stable and planted character. The Classic 350 also gets dual channel ABS. The Classic weighs around 195 kg (kerb), which makes it 4 kg heavier than the T40.

Features

The Bonneville T40 is easily the most feature loaded Triumph 350 cc bike. It gets all-LED lights along with a round TFT instrument cluster. It supports smartphone connectivity along with SMS/call alerts, and Google Maps mirroring. Triumph has also given this bike five riding modes – Road, Rain, Eco and two customisable modes. There is also cruise control, lean-sensitive ABS with optimised cornering ABS, along with optimised traction control. Other features include cruise control, self-cancelling indicators, a USB Type-C charging port and backlit switchgear. The base T4 variant gets a colour LCD console with smartphone connectivity, and turn-by-turn navigation. However, it misses out on cruise control, and cornering ABS, but gets all other features as the  T40 range.

When compared to the T40, the Classic 350 gets a more simpler features list, depending on the variant. It is available with LED lighting, a USB-C charging port, gear-position indicator and Royal Enfield’s Tripper navigation system on higher variants.

BikeDekho Says

The Classic 350 has the advantage of being an established motorcycle with a proven engine, widespread service network and a strong reputation among retro-bike buyers. It is the better choice for someone looking for a relaxed, comfortable and relatively affordable classic motorcycle. The Bonneville T40, meanwhile, could appeal to buyers who want something more premium and distinctive. Its stronger expected performance, Bonneville-inspired styling and long features list could make it a more desirable motorcycle for enthusiasts.

However, pricing changes the scene completely. Even when compared to the top-spec Classic 350, the base Bonneville T4 is still Rs 28,930 more expensive. Meanwhile, the top-spec T40 is Rs 53,930 more expensive than the top-spec Classic 350. This makes the Triumph a significantly more expensive proposition, despite both motorcycles competing in the same 350cc retro roadster space. For value, relaxed riding and easy ownership, the Classic 350 makes more sense. For buyers willing to pay a premium for stronger performance, premium appeal and exclusivity, the Bonneville T40 could be the more exciting choice.
