BMW G 310 R And G 310 GS: End Of The Line For The 2 Most Affordable BMW Bikes

BMW Motorrad India seems to have discontinued the G 310 R and the G 310 GS in the country, according to our dealership sources. Stocks of both the bikes have been depleted across most dealerships as well, and the G 310 R has been removed from the BMW India website too. The manufacturer now only offers the BMW G 310 RR supersport in India. The discontinuation of the two bikes likely comes after increasing competition from rivals. 

The BMW G 310 R was the brand’s street fighter offering in the 300cc segment, and it looked quite promising. The bike was powered by the same 312cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine as the BMW G 310 RR. The engine produces 34PS at 9,500rpm and 28Nm at 7,500rpm.

The power and performance is decent, but when looking at the bike from a value for money perspective it is hard to justify. The competition right now, which includes the KTM 390 Duke offers a lot more performance (12PS and 11Nm more), along with a whole host of features and riding aids, with cruise control being the newest addition. 

The Duke 390 is offering all this at a price of Rs 2,95,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi), whereas the G 310 R was last sold at Rs 2,90,000 (ex-showroom). Other than the premium BMW badging, the bike offered very little in terms of features, and came off as pretty basic.

The story is similar with the BMW G 310 GS as well. The G 310 GS was a really good looking bike, a capable touring motorcycle with decent off-road capabilities. But when taking the market conditions into account, the bike was clearly not able to keep up with its rivals, which now include the KTM 390 Adventure and the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450. The Himalayan offers a lot more performance with 6PS and 12Nm more, that too at a price that is Rs 32,000 cheaper (for the top-end Himalayan Hanle Black variant).

The 390 Adventure, which is priced at Rs 3,67,699 (ex-showroom), comes with a much superior performance. The bike is a much better tourer with features like traction control on offer. Along with this, it also gets adjustable suspension, and has really good off-road capabilities. The G 310 GS which is priced at Rs 3,30,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi) makes no sense from a value-for-money perspective.

BMW did not give any major updates to their 310 platform either. Although the brand is still currently selling the BMW G 310 RR, we think it is just a matter of time before that’s discontinued as well, considering it offers much less features compared to the bike it’s based on, the TVS Apache RR 310. Apart from the badge value, there’s not much going for the G 310 RR either. 

However, things are not as gloomy for the German bikemaker. In fact, BMW Motorrad has been working on a 450cc parallel twin platform, which will likely be their main focus in the future. The brand gave us a glimpse of what the new platform will be capable of with the unveiling of the BMW F 450 GS concept at the Auto Expo in India. After the production version of this ADV, expect BMW Motorrad to bring out a naked bike in this engine platform too. That said, it will take a few years for the streetfighter to hit the roads.
