New BS6-compliant KTM RC 390 Spotted Testing

The updated motorcycle is likely to feature a larger Euro 5/BS6-compliant motor

Spy shots from Austria showing a test mule of the new KTM RC 390 have emerged online. The design of the motorcycle has been reworked, and the new bike is expected to look more mature and conventional in contrast to the polarising appearance of the outgoing bike. While the current model has a sharp and pointed nose section with twin projector headlights, the new bike seems to feature a more rounded fairing, a taller screen and a single projector headlight. 

Pillion comfort has been a troublesome affair on the present RC 390, but the subframe and seats have been redesigned on the updated bike. The pillion seat appears larger and flatter than on the current version. This, along with the fact that the subframe itself also doesn’t seem to be as steeply inclined as before, means that passengers should have a more comfortable time on the new bike. 

Another big complaint with the current RC is the size of the fuel tank, and KTM seems to have addressed this issue as well, with the test mule seemingly sporting a larger fuel tank. The handlebars also appear to have been modified to provide a slightly more relaxed riding position.

Certain rumours suggest that in order to meet stricter emission norms while still retaining all of its current engine performance, the new RC might see an increase in engine displacement. However, we cannot provide any official confirmation on this at the moment. What we can tell you is that the test mule features a new catalytic converter and end-can.

Earlier this year, an updated 390 Duke was spotted testing with a new frame and swingarm. These changes should make their way to the new RC as well. The updated 390s are expected to officially break cover towards the end of next year, and be introduced as 2021 models. With the recent launch of the KTM 790 Duke and the upcoming 390 Adventure and updates to the 200 Duke, the orange brand has a lot going on at the moment.
