The upcoming motorcycle shares engine with the YZF-R15 v3.0

[UPDATE: Yamaha has launched the MT-15 at a price of Rs 1.36 Lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi]

  • As per the leaked specs, the India-spec MT-15 makes 19.3PS at 10,000rpm.
  • Makes the same amount of power as the YZF-R15 Version 3.0.
  • As expected, comes with ABS, likely a dual-channel unit.
  • Likely to be launched in the next few months.

Specifications of the India-bound Yamaha MT-15 have surfaced online in a document that was issued by the Delhi Transport Department for approval of registration. The circular reveals details like the engine capacity, power output, and dimensions of the upcoming streetfighter.

The India-spec MT-15 packs the same 155cc engine as the Yamaha YZF-R15 Version 3.0, and makes the same 19.3PS of power at 10,000rpm. Going by the output, expect the torque numbers to be the same as well: 14.7Nm of twist arriving in at 8500rpm. The motorcycle packs Variable Valve Actuation technology which improves power delivery in the higher rev range. Transmission is a 6-speed unit with assist and slipper clutch.

The wheelbase, at 1335mm, is 10mm longer than the R15 v3.0. Even the overall length (2020mm) is 30mm longer than the faired bike. This should help impart better straight-line stability.  The kerb weight isn’t revealed but the gross vehicle weight stands at 288kg. This is the sum of maximum loading capacity and the kerb weight of the motorcycle.

As per the recent spy shots, the India-bound bike comes with telescopic forks and a box-section swingarm instead of the inverted forks and aluminium swingarm found on the bike sold abroad. This is to keep costs in check. As expected, it gets disc brakes at both ends with ABS to comply with the new safety norms in the country. The ABS unit is likely to be a dual-channel one, just like the R15 v3.0.

Expect Yamaha to launch the MT-15 in the next few months. We believe it will be priced around Rs 1.2 lakh (ex-showroom), around Rs 20,000 cheaper than the R15 v3.0 ABS. Once launched, it will lock horns with the KTM 125 Duke in our market.
