Remember the Bajaj Blade shown at the 2006 Auto Expo? Well, the upcoming e-scooter could be a modern interpretation of that

Bajaj Auto has filed for a trademark of the name ‘Bajaj Blade’ on March 19, and the application is currently being reviewed. So what exactly will it be?

Well, it is likely to be a scooter as Bajaj had already unveiled the Blade, a 125cc scooter, back at the 2006 Auto Expo. Given that Bajaj has been concentrating lately on the electric scooter segment, we believe it could be a green, modern avatar of the Blade, under the Chetak sub-brand.

We’ve already seen the Vektorr electric scooter from Bajaj’s Swedish cousin Husqvarna being tested here, and we believe Blade could be Bajaj’s version of the Swedish scooter, complete with a more angular, sporty styling. Expect its powertrain and underpinnings to be derived from the Bajaj Chetak, in a slightly sportier tune. However, the chassis could be derived from the Vektorr to ensure sporty dynamics. Expect geeky features including connectivity with navigation to be present as well.

With the upcoming Bajaj Blade, the Pune-based bikemaker will be able to cater to two different kinds of audiences using one electric scooter’s platform. The Chetak will cater to those who are looking for a no-nonsense retro-styled scooter, and the Blade will be for younger audiences who prefer their electric scooter to have a bit of pizzazz. It will go up against the Ather 450X, Ola S1 Pro, Simple One, the upcoming Suzuki Burgman Electric and Hero Vida electric scooter.

As far as pricing is concerned, the Bajaj Blade will command a slight premium over the Chetak, which currently retails at Rs 1,53,588 (on-road Delhi, including FAME II subsidies but excluding state subsidy). Since it has just been filed for a trademark, the e-scooter’s launch is still some time away, perhaps in late 2023.

Additionally, Bajaj has filed for trademarks of two names: ‘Bajaj Tecnica’ and ‘Bajaj Technik’. We believe it could be the name of Bajaj’s upcoming commercial three-wheeler. Going green in the commercial segment will play an important role in Bajaj’s business growth as it will be able to fend off newer, smaller players in the commercial EV segment effectively.
