Upcoming Honda CB500 vs Royal Enfield Classic 500: Image Comparison

Honda appears to be quite late to the party with the unveiling of the all-new CB500 in 2026. While the motorcycle currently has no direct rivals in India, the 500cc segment was once ruled by the Royal Enfield Classic 500. The motorcycle was the king of the 500cc space back then, before Royal Enfield moved up to the 650cc segment and shifted its focus towards liquid-cooled engines. Now, Honda is looking to fill the gap between the 350cc and 650cc motorcycles with its new 500cc roadster. So, how does Honda’s CB500 compare with the iconic Classic 500 in terms of design? Here is a look:

Front Design: Modern Classic vs Pure Classic

Starting from the front, the Honda CB500 and the Royal Enfield Classic 500 follow two very different design philosophies. The CB 500 gets a slightly modern take on the classic roadster formula, with a round LED headlight, a slim fuel tank and a clean, premium-looking front end. It looks familiar, but has enough modern detailing to make it feel like a motorcycle from 2026.

The Royal Enfield Classic 500, on the other hand, stayed true to its retro roots. Its round halogen headlight with the iconic tiger-eye pilot lights, chrome detailing, traditional indicators and teardrop-shaped fuel tank gave it a timeless appeal. The motorcycle looked like a modern interpretation of a post-war British motorcycle, and that was a big part of its charm.

Side Profile: Modern Roadster vs Retro Classic

The differences become more obvious when viewed from the side. The Honda CB500 has a more contemporary roadster stance, with compact proportions, exposed mechanical components and an overall clean design. Other things that should stand out are the ribbed single-piece seat, twin rear shocks and a chunky chrome exhaust.

The Classic 500, meanwhile, had a much more traditional appearance. It had a split-seat setup, chrome-finished components and spoke wheels with slim tyres, which gave it a distinct old-school character. The design was instantly recognisable, and, for many buyers, that was its biggest strength. While the CB 500 looks more premium and modern, the Classic 500 had a personality that was difficult to replicate.

Rear Design: Clean vs Traditional

At the rear, the Honda CB500 continues with its modern approach. The motorcycle gets a clean tail section which looks quite similar to the Honda CB350. There is a neatly integrated LED taillight and a more contemporary rear design. It looks compact and well-finished without being overly flashy.

The Classic 500, in comparison, had a more traditional rear profile. The long rounded rear fender and a classic round halogen taillight perfectly complemented the motorcycle’s overall retro styling. It was simple, but that simplicity was exactly what made it appealing.

The Motors: Premium vs Classy Finish

The Honda CB500 gets a premium-looking brushed aluminium finish across its engine, giving it a clean and modern appearance. The Classic 500, meanwhile, featured a proper chrome-finished engine that added to its old-school charm. However, some variants were also offered with an all-black engine treatment, giving the motorcycle a more stealthy and contemporary look.

The CB500 Is Eyeing The Gap Left By The Classic 500

With the Royal Enfield Classic 500 gone, there's a gap between the popular 350cc motorcycles and the larger 650cc offerings. And this is precisely where Honda will be positioning the CB500. The motorcycle brings a larger-capacity engine and a more premium positioning, without making the jump all the way to the 650cc segment.

The Honda CB500 is clearly the more modern motorcycle. It looks sharper, more premium and more in tune with current design trends. However, the Royal Enfield Classic 500 had something that is difficult to measure on paper — character.

Six years after it was discontinued, its design still remains instantly recognisable. The CB500 may be newer and more modern, but when it comes to pure retro appeal and timeless charm, the Classic 500 still takes the cake. And that is what makes Honda’s timing interesting. The brand may be entering a segment with no direct rivals today, but the motorcycle is essentially stepping into a space that the Classic 500 once dominated. The big question now is whether the CB500 can create the same kind of identity for itself while filling the gap between the 350cc and 650cc segments.
