Yamaha Y2F-R2 M: Variant Explained

The much-awaited Yamaha YZF-R2 has been launched in India. It’s available in three variants: standard, standard with quickshifter, and the top-of-the-line YZF-R2 M variant. The flagship variant is priced at Rs 2,53,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi)—a premium of Rs 22,500 over the entry-level variant. Here is a breakdown of what sets the top model apart and whether it justifies the higher price tag demanded by Yamaha:

Design

The YZF-R2 M shares its aggressive, fully-faired silhouette with the rest of the R2 range. However, the top-spec R2 M stands out with exclusive styling touches. It gets a signature Metallic Gray paint scheme paired with contrasting blue alloy wheels, a 3D tank emblem, and a premium faux-suede seat cover. Additional cosmetic highlights include a silver-finished swingarm, brushed metal finish on the exhaust end cap, and engraved fork caps that give it a distinct track-inspired appeal over the lower variants.

Features

All variants of the YZF-R2 come with a 5-inch full-colour TFT display that offers smartphone connectivity via the Y-Connect app for turn-by-turn navigation. The electronics suite, enabled by a ride-by-wire throttle, includes Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) with three standard riding modes (Street, Sport, Rain) and a Custom mode. The bi-directional quickshifter, allowing for clutchless up and downshifts, is standard on the R2 M and the mid-spec variant. The biggest convenience feature exclusive to the M variant is the key fob for keyless ignition. Additionally, it comes with 5-position adjustable clutch and brake levers, so that you can adjust the lever reach as per the size of your hand.

Engine 

Other than the already-mentioned quickshifter, the other aspects of the engine are exactly the same across all variants. The new 204cc liquid-cooled motor churns out 26.5 PS at 10,000 rpm and 19.1 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm. You also get assist and slipper clutch, same as the lower variants.

 Safety & Hardware

The hardware is where the R2 M offers its biggest functional advantage over the lower trims. While safety essentials like dual-channel ABS, traction control, and the radially-mounted Nissin front caliper are standard across the board, the R2 M gets upgraded suspension components. It features a 37mm KYB inverted fork with preload adjustability and a preload-adjustable linked monocross rear shock. This allows riders to tailor the suspension setup for track days or varying load conditions / terrain.

If you’re a supersport enthusiast who wants an affordable faired bike that also allows the flexibility to set the suspension as per your liking, then the Yamaha YZF-R2 M variant makes sense. You even get a bidirectional quickshifter, keyfob, and adjustable levers as a bonus. That said, the Rs 22,500 premium is a little tricky to justify. If you’re seeking the best value, you’re not really losing out on much with choosing the base variant, if you ask us.
