The scooter’s fascia seems inspired by the Yamaha R1

Yamaha first showcased the E01 concept at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2019. Expected to offer a real-world range of 70-80km. Gets disc brakes at both ends, LCD instrument cluster, and riding modes.

It seems Yamaha’s EV plans are finally getting a move on, with the Yamaha E01 electric scooter being spotted doing the rounds in Japan.

According to sources, the bikemaker had organised a test ride for media companies in Japan to get inputs on the electric scooter and also give them a taste of what’s coming.

The test vehicle is wrapped heavily in camouflage, but the overall design looks similar to the E01 concept showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2019. What’s new here, though, is the twin LED projector lamps up front, which seem inspired by the Yamaha R1.

At the rear, you get a dangling tail section – like the Husqvarna Vektorr – with integrated grab handles, giving the E01 a neat-looking rear.

Aboard the scooter, and the NMax inspiration becomes evident, thanks to the switchgear, LCD instrument cluster, and the handlebar. Here, however, the instrument cluster only shows speed and battery charge. We believe the final production model will get a more prominent readout.

These aside, the E01 electric scooter gets disc brakes at both ends, 13-inch wheels, ABS, keyless ignition, and riding modes.

The only thing left to see now is the range and power. Of course, Yamaha hasn’t given this away at the event but the scooter is expected to boast 70-80km of real-world range. Considering you don’t get swappable batteries in this, the range seems a little disappointing. But it’s something Yamaha can easily fix before launching it. So we’re keeping our fingers crossed.

Yamaha currently plans to sell the E01 electric scooter in European, American, and Japanese markets. This will be followed by Southeast Asian markets, but an India launch is unlikely, at least in the near future.
