TVS Jupiter Vs Honda Activa: Image Comparison

Lets find out which is the best family scooter in India

The TVS Jupiter and Honda Activa are two of the popular family scooters in the Indian market. They offer a perfect blend between a consumer friendly design and reliable engines. Lets have a closer look at how these two family scooters compete against each other.

Design

The TVS Jupiter recently got a comprehensive update and the design now looks modern and pleasing. It gets well designed body panels and is available in some exciting colour options which goes well with the overall design of this family scooter.

On the other hand, the Honda Activa continues to be one of the most popular two-wheelers in the Indian market thanks to its impressive sales figures. In terms of design, the Activa has remained almost unchanged for a lot of years now with only minor updates. It still looks good and appealing to the masses.

Performance

The TVS Jupiter gets an OBD-2B compliant 113.3cc single-cylinder, air-cooled motor which makes 8.02PS and 9.2Nm. The scooter also gets TVS’S iGo assist which adds 0.6Nm more torque making overtaking easier. The engine offers enough grunt for city commutes with usable performance reserved for the highway.

The Honda Activa gets an OBD-2B compliant 109.51cc single-cylinder, air-cooled motor which produces 7.8PS and 9.5Nm. The Activa has been praised for its linear power delivery and impressive refinement. It does feel a lot more smoother than the Jupiter in comparison while both scooters perform similarly in real world conditions.

Underpinnings

The TVS Jupiter gets a well tuned conventional telescopic fork and a rear monoshock. It gets a front disc and rear drum brake setup which offer enough stopping power. At 106kg (kerb), the Jupiter is quite light for a scooter and the low 765mm seat height makes it even more convenient to ride.

The Honda Activa also gets a telescopic fork and rear monoshock with the suspension setup tuned to take on our Indian roads with ease. The braking hardware on the Honda Activa is not as modern as the Jupiter, as it still only gets drum brakes at both ends. At 105kg (kerb), the Activa is 1 kg lighter and the seat height is similar at 765mm.

Practicality

Being family scooters, it's important for them to be good in terms of practicality too. The TVS Jupiter gets a class-leading 33-litre underseat storage that could accommodate a lot of groceries. Along with this it also gets a front mounted fuel filer cap, twin hooks and decently spacious footboard area.

In comparison the Honda Activa gets a small 18-litre underseat storage. The scooter also gets a front pocket, decent size footboard area and twin hooks for convenience.

Features

In terms of features, the TVS Jupiter gets all LED lighting and an LCD  instrument console which shows all the crucial information. It also supports smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth along with turn-by-turn navigation and SMS/call alerts.

The Activa gets an LED headlight along with halogen indicators and tail lamp. The OBD-2B compliant Activa gets a 4.2-inch TFT display. It supports turn-by-turn navigation and SMS/call alerts. However, the lower variant still gets an analogue display which is very basic.

BikeDekho Says

At a price of Rs 74,691 (ex-showroom Delhi), the TVS Jupiter is Rs 3,993 cheaper than the Honda Activa, which costs Rs 78,684 (ex-showroom Delhi).

Both of these scooters offer almost similar real world performance with the Jupiter having a slight advantage of the iGo feature which gives it extra grunt. Other than this, both of these scooters are well equipped  in terms of looks, offer usable performance and a usable set of features. But the big underseat storage of the Jupiter makes it a lot more practical in the real world.
