Royal Enfield Himalayan

Royal Enfield (RE) has achieved cult status amongst motorcycle tourers in our country. Not just Indians but foreign nationals too have taken to its unmistakable thump. It gave bikers several options to choose from its lineup – the Electra, the Classic, the Chrome, the Thunderbird and the Continental GT. The adventure community has been wanting more from the brand and RE decided to give them just that.

March 16th, 2016 shall see the manufacturer launch one of its most awaited model amongst the media and auto professionals at a 5-star suburban hotel in Mumbai. Yes we are talking about none other than – The Himalayan, an adventure tourer with a single-minded purpose “Fun”. The bike’s spied pictures were spotted on the internet a few months before it was unveiled just ahead of the 2016 Auto Expo.

For now, the Himalayan will be produced and marketed solely in India. The motorcycle has been developed from the ground up with vital inputs coming from Dakar participant and India’s motocross veteran – CS Santosh. He is pretty impressed with the final output and his verdict should certainly do well for the brand.

The Himalayan is equipped with a Long Stroke engine, coded (LS410). This 411cc, single cylinder, single overhead cam engine with a counter balancer, generates a maximum power of 24.5bhp at 6,500rpm and a peak torque of 32Nm between 4,000-4,500rpm. Keeping its touring intentions in mind, RE engineers have ensured the service intervals are at 10,000 km intervals unlike the other models customers are used to.

Expected to be priced around Rs. 1.6 lac (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Himalayan does not have any direct competition in the Indian market as of now. But, KTM has confirmed it will be launching an adventure tourer motorcycle in the country in coming months based on the Duke 200/390.
