Ola S1 Gen 3 Electric Scooters Arriving In January 2025

Ola Electric has announced in a recent shareholders’ call that its Gen 3 scooters will be launched in January 2025. The next-gen electric scooters were earlier planned to be launched by August 2025 but the timeline has now been accelerated.
Recently, the EV maker unveiled its latest Gen 3 platform with the battery pack which will be developed in-house. The motor, battery, and the electronics will be integrated into a single box unit in this platform and then that box will be further integrated with the scooter’s chassis, acting as a stressed member. Ola Electric has said that, because of this, it’ll be able to build a sporty commuter and a touring scooter based on the same platform. Also, the manufacturer has claimed the new versions of the S1 Pro, S1 Air and S1 X will have a higher and more efficient torque output because the motor in the Gen 3 scooters will be magnetless and that its components will be integrated with magnetised electrical coils instead of permanent magnets. The materials for the motor will also be sourced domestically.
Ola Electric’s Founder and Managing Director, Bhavish Aggarwal, revealed in a recent press briefing that the EV maker is developing lithium-ion cells at its Gigafactory in Tamil Nadu. Developing its own battery pack and sourcing materials for the motor within the country will significantly help in reducing the production costs of the scooters and their price tags in the process.
FAME 2 followed by EMPS subsidies have helped keep the costs of electric scooters in a somewhat affordable range till now. But when subsidies will end eventually, the costs of these scooters will likely shoot up due to the reliance on imported battery packs and other parts. So, in-house developed batteries and motors will help keep costs in check and improve EV penetration across the country in the process.
