Bajaj will handle the manufacturing and distribution of new Triumph bikes

  • Bajaj and Triumph have joined hands to produce 200cc to 750cc mid-capacity motorcycles.
  • It will be based on a new engine platform.
  • The most affordable bike will be priced under Rs 2 lakh.
  • The first of these bikes will debut by 2022.

Bajaj has partnered with iconic British brand Triumph to co-develop 200cc to 750cc bikes for emerging markets. The first of these bikes will debut by 2022 and will be based on an all-new platform. More importantly, the most affordable product under this joint venture will be priced below Rs 2 lakh. Unfortunately, it won’t bare Bajaj’s logo. In fact, none of them will.

The non-equity partnership between Bajaj and Triumph allows the former to merely manufacture and help distribute these upcoming bikes. In turn, offering the British brand the opportunity to penetrate entry-level markets in developing countries. Bajaj will benefit from the exposure to R&D and the profits earned through manufacturing. Moreover, Bajaj isn’t as proficient as Triumph in the big bike segment, making it less capable of selling 750cc motorcycles.

As for the bikes, they are expected to run on either a single or parallel-twin platform based on the range. While details are scarce, we could expect neo-retro and modern classic motorcycles designed and developed by Triumph, but manufactured by Bajaj at its Chakan plant. Interestingly, these bikes will be named after the current Triumph lineup like Bonneville, Street, Tiger

All said and done, this could very well be a learning exercise for Bajaj. The brand could use the acquired knowledge from Triumph along with its expertise in big bikes to create its own set of slightly more premium motorcycles in the future. How long this would take is anyone’s guess.
