The Supreme Court has allowed the registration of BS4 vehicles for those who missed it because of the lockdown due to COVID-19

  • Initially, the plan was to clear out BS4 inventories by March 31, 2020.
  • But economies across the world were disrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic, and a lockdown was announced in March-end.
  • Because of this, a lot of those who had purchased BS4-compliant vehicles just before the lockdown started were unable to register.
  • Now with the Supreme Court’s verdict, customers should be able to complete the paperwork.

The Indian auto industry made the transition from BS4 to BS6 emission standards on April 1, 2020. Earlier, the plan was to sell off all the remaining stock of BS4-compliant two-wheelers before March 31, 2020. However, cases of the coronavirus pandemic started rising in March end, forcing the government to announce a complete nationwide lockdown on March 24. But according to the vehicle registration website ‘Vahan’, only 9,01,223 out of 9,56,015 BS4 vehicles were registered between March 12 and March 31, 2020, before things got disrupted due to the lockdown.

In a bid to offer peace of mind to the customers who got their vehicles stuck in a limbo of paperwork, the Supreme Court has now allowed the registration of BS4-compliant vehicles that were bought in March.

Earlier, the Supreme Court gave a 10-day leeway period for all cities except the NCR region to allow the sale of 10 percent of unsold BS4-compliant vehicles at the last moment. However, apart from customers missing out on registrations due to the lockdown, dealers also reportedly oversold beyond the threshold, drawing the Supreme Court’s ire. But now with the lockdown norms being relaxed and RTO offices commencing operations, registering your vehicle should be a hassle-free process. In a related development, many manufacturers like Royal Enfield, Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Bajaj, Hero MotoCorp and TVS have extended their service plans and in some cases, the warranties as well, to ensure peace of mind since most vehicles were left unused during the strict lockdown.
