Honda CB500X Is BS6 Compliant; India Launch Likely In 2021

The entire 500cc portfolio has received the BS6 update in Europe

• Despite the BS6 update, power and torque figures are similar to the BS4 engine.
• Honda has also introduced three colour options as part of the update.
• The CB500X could come to India via the CKD route. 

Honda has updated its motorcycle portfolio in the EU (European Union) to meet the latest emission norms. In a normal situation, that doesn’t have much to do with the Indian context, but this time it does. Among the bikes that have been updated is the Honda CB500X. At a glance, nothing looks different, but the big news is that Honda's ADV offering is now Euro 5 compliant, which means it now adheres to the Indian BS6 norms as well. Before you get excited and head to the nearest Honda Big Wing dealership, hold on. The Honda 500X won’t debut here this year. According to our sources, the launch is likely in the first half of 2021 for an expected price of around Rs 5.50 lakh (ex-showroom). 

Despite the cleaner emission norms, Honda engineers have managed to maintain the power and torque figures. The 471cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin motor churns out 47PS of power and 43Nm of torque. On paper, the engine specs don't look that impressive, especially when one thinks of the KTM 390 ADV. However, the real trick is the linear and stress-free manner in which the powerplant delivers its power -- ideal for touring. It features a 6-speed transmission with a slipper clutch. In terms of styling, the Honda CB500X is pleasing to the eyes. It is a compact bike, unlike traditional ADVs that are big and intimidating. As mentioned, there are no cosmetic updates apart from the introduction of three colours: Grand Prix Red, Matt Gunpowder Black Metallic and Pearl Metalloid White. Honda’s 500cc ADV bike features a fully digital instrument console with gear position and gear shift up indicator, all-LED lighting and dual-channel ABS.

Seat height is a decent 830mm and the bike weighs 197kg (kerb weight). Suspension hardware comprises a telescopic front fork adjustable for preload and a 5-step preload-adjustable monoshock at the back. The Honda CB500X rides on a 19- and 17-inch cast aluminium alloy wheel combo wrapped with 110 and 160 section tyres at the front and back respectively. The generous fuel tank capacity of 17.5 litres coupled with the claimed mileage of 27.8kmpl should result in fewer fuel stops when touring.
