Fortunately, the peak power has not dropped

  • The Bajaj Avenger Street 220 and the Avenger Cruise 220 BS6 get a fuel-injected motor.
  • Unlike the Bajaj Pulsar 220F BS6, there has been no drop in power in the BS6-compliant Avenger 220 range.
  • That said, expect the torque figure to go down slightly.
  • Expect the Bajaj Avenger 220 BS6 range to command a premium of about Rs 8,000 to Rs 9,000 over the corresponding BS4 version.

The specifications of the Bajaj Avenger Cruise 220 BS6 and the Bajaj Avenger Street 220 BS6 have been revealed. Good news is that there is no drop in power. The BS6-compliant fuel-injected 220cc air-cooled engine with oil cooler makes 19.03PS at 8400rpm, which is the same as the BS4-compliant models (Street 220 and Cruise 220). It’s interesting how Bajaj has retained the power figures considering the BS6-compliant version of its naked twin, the Pulsar 220F BS6, produces 0.53PS less than its BS4-compliant counterpart.

However, expect the peak torque in the Avenger 220 BS6 range to go down slightly in favour of cleaner emissions. The BS4-compliant bikes make 17.5Nm at 7000rpm. Expect the two motorcycles to retain the same 5-speed transmission. Even the underpinnings -- telescopic front fork, twin rear shock absorbers, 260mm front disc with single-channel ABS, and 130mm rear drum -- will be retained.

Not surprisingly, Bajaj has also retained the dimensions in the BS6 bike. The wheelbase (1,490mm), as well as overall length (2,210mm) and width (806mm) have remained unchanged. Interestingly, the height has gone down from 1,321mm in the Cruise 220 BS4 to 1,142mm in the BS6 version. This 179mm difference is likely due to the rearview mirrors. On the other hand, the 1,070mm height has remained unchanged in the Avenger Street 220 BS6.

Expect Bajaj to launch the two motorcycles in a week or two. The bikes are likely to command a premium of around Rs 8,000 to Rs 9,000 over the BS4-compliant versions. The Avenger Street 220 BS4 and the Avenger Cruise 220 BS4 cost Rs 1,05,088 (ex-showroom Delhi). In terms of rivals, the two motorcycles go head-to-head against the Suzuki Intruder BS6, which is set to be launched soon.

The primary difference between the two motorcycles is that the Cruise variant gets a windshield, mini-ape hanger handlebars, and a cushioned backrest whereas the Street variant gets lower handlebars, a small flyscreen, and a conventional grab rail at the rear.
