Ather Energy has updated its scooter lineup with smaller battery packs and has introduced Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery cells in select models. Here are the details.
Ather Rizta Series
The most significant change has happened in the Ather Rizta series, which now gets both Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) and Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) battery packs.
The Rizta S earlier came with a 2.9 kWh battery pack, but it now gets a smaller 2.7 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery pack. Ather claims that with the following change, the IDC (Indian Driving Conditions) range remains unchanged at 123 km.
The Rizta Z also gets the same 2.7 kWh LFP battery pack, while its bigger battery pack variant continues to use Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) battery chemistry, but with the capacity reduced from 3.7 kWh to 3.5 kWh. However, despite the drop in capacity, the IDC range has increased to 161 km from 159 km.
Ather 450 Series
The 450 series has also seen a reduction in battery capacity in the bigger battery pack variants, but it continues to be powered by Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) battery technology.
The Ather 450S now gets a smaller 3.5 kWh battery pack instead of the 3.7 kWh earlier. However, the smaller 2.9 kWh battery pack remains unchanged. The claimed IDC (Indian Driving Conditions) range for the smaller battery pack remains the same at 122km while the bigger battery pack variant, despite the drop in battery capacity, offers more IDC range of 161km compared to 159Km before.
The Ather 450X also gets the smaller 3.5 kWh instead of the 3.7kWh battery pack, and the smaller 2.9 kWh remains the same. The smaller battery pack continues to offer a claimed IDC range of 126km as before, but the 3.5kWh offers more range than before, at 161km compared to 159km earlier.
On both scooters, the larger battery pack variants get a bigger 900 W charger that replaces the older 700 W charger. Ather claims this new charger can charge the scooter from 0-80% in 3 hours 12 minutes, compared to 4 hours 30 minutes earlier.
Other than these changes, the performance, features, and underpinnings of both the Ather Rizta and Ather 450 series remain unchanged. LFP battery packs offer great thermal stability and long life, while also being more cost-effective. NMC packs have higher energy density, but are costlier. Ather has been clever in ensuring the range and the price are not affected, so customers need not worry on these two fronts – which are very critical in buying an EV. Also, having different chemistries helps Ather to be more independent in case there are any disruptions in the supply chain of one.
