Ampere has launched the Magnus G Max e-scooter, priced at Rs 94,999 (introductory ex-showroom price). The new electric scooter comes with a LFP (Lithium Ferro Phosphate) battery pack for better safety compared to a conventional lithium-ion battery pack.

The Ampere Magnus G Max costs Rs 94,999 (introductory, ex-showroom Bengaluru). It is available in two colour schemes: Monsoon Blue, and Matcha Green and Cinnamon Copper.

What Is It?

• A family-friendly e-scooter with a spacious floorboard, and a long single-piece seat

• Neutral design that is subtle, yet looks elegant enough

• Gets a dual-tone finish with LED indicators neatly integrated into the apron

• Has a chrome bezel on top of its LED headlamp, giving it a premium look

• Subtle striped graphics on its apron and side panels make it look more premium

• Comes with a silver-coloured pillion grabrail. We’d have liked it if it had a cushioned pillion backrest, though.

Electric Performance? Good Enough For City Commutes 

The Ampere Magnus G Max comes with a 3kWh LFP (Lithium Ferro Phosphate) battery pack with 100km of claimed real world range, longest in the Ampere Magnus series. It drives the scooter’s hub motor, which outputs 1.5kW of nominal, and 2.5kW of peak power. The battery pack comes with a 5-year or 75,000km warranty. While LFP batteries aren’t as energy dense as regular lithium-ion battery packs, they have the advantage of being more thermally stable (less prone to catching fire), greater life cycle, and are also cost-effective to manufacture.

• The Ampere Magnus G Max has drum brakes at both ends with a combined braking system as standard

• Being the most expensive version under the Magnus lineup, we’d have liked it if it came with a front disc.

• Comes with alloy wheels wrapped in tubeless tyres for convenience. The front wheel appears to be a 12-inch unit

• Gets a telescopic fork and twin rear shock absorbers

• Features include LED lighting setup, three riding modes (Eco, City, and Reverse), and a USB charging port

• It gets a 3.5-inch LCD instrument console which shows essential readouts

• More connected features are available as an optional accessory

Our Take — Who Should Consider It?

With the Rs 94,999 price tag, it rivals the newly launched Bajaj Chetak C25 (costs Rs 91,399 ex-showroom), Ola S1X (retails at Rs 84,999), and the TVS Orbiter (priced at Rs 1,04,900). TVS realised the need for an EV that’s even more affordable than the iQube, and hence came up with the Orbiter. Months later, Bajaj followed it up with the launch of the Chetak C25, and now, the G Max seems to be Ampere’s response to the growing entry-level family scooter segment. 

One thing is clear - while customers want affordable EVs, they do not want to compromise much on everyday usability, and hence the Ampere’s claimed real-world range figure and practical set of features seem to tick all the right boxes for those who are looking for a pocket-friendly family electric scooter. Will it rack up as many sales as the EVs from bigger brands? Only time will tell.
