Yamaha XSR155 Price Will Be Cheaper Or Costlier Than Yamaha MT 15? We Analyse

This upcoming Japanese neo-retro motorcycle could slot between the Yamaha MT-15 and the Yamaha R15

[UPDATE: The Yamaha XSR 155 has been launched in India, and they've really surprised us with the price]

Yamaha's neo-retro motorcycle XSR155 was recently spotted testing in India and is likely to be launched by November 11, 2025. Given that the new GST tax reforms will be in action by September 22, 2025, here's an analysis of its expected price in India.

Pricing In Southeast Asian Market

The Yamaha XSR155 is already on sale in the Indonesian market, where it is sold alongside the popular R15 V4 and MT-15. In Indonesia, the XSR155 is priced at Rp 39,015,000 OTR Jakarta (around Rs 2.08 lakh on-road). On the other hand, the Yamaha MT-15 is slightly costlier, Rp 39,665,000 OTR Jakarta (about Rs 2.12 lakh on-road). This positioning has helped Yamaha attract buyers who want a neo-retro motorcycle without paying a premium over its much sportier sibling. This is the same story in Thailand too.

However, for the Indian market, Yamaha is expected to position the XSR155 slightly in the premium segment to cash in on the retro aesthetics. Afterall, the Yamaha RX100 had (and still has) a huge fan following, and in some ways, the XSR155 can be considered as the next best thing to expect from Yamaha, as far as peppy small-capacity retro bikes are concerned.

GST Tax Reforms 2025 And Expected Pricing Factoring In The New GST 2.0

The timing of the XSR155’s arrival is quite significant because of the recent GST reforms that will come into effect on September 22, 2025.

This will reduce the tax rate on two-wheelers up to 350cc from 28% to 18%. Yamaha already confirmed that it will fully pass on the tax benefits to customers, and hence all Yamaha bikes and scooters sold in India will get cheaper. The MT-15 in particular, may witness Rs 13,000-15,000 price drop, so the base variant (Metallic Black) may cost Rs 1.56 lakh whereas the top-end version might cost around Rs 1.66 lakh. You can check a detailed variant-wise expected price list here.

While Yamaha may want to keep the XSR155 a bit premium, it also cannot afford to keep it too out of reach for buyers either. Afterall, the MT-15 outsold the R15 in the last financial year, so it’s clear that riders like the usability of a streetfighter. So pricing will be even more important in bringing in a retro avatar on the same platform that’ll appeal to an even wider audience.

It’s certain that the XSR155 will be cheaper than the R15 as it doesn’t get fairing and other go-fast bits, but Yamaha might just price it a little higher than the base variant of the MT-15, possibly at around Rs 1.60 lakh (all prices ex-showroom). This will position it right against the mid-spec Dapper and Rio colour variants of the Royal Enfield Hunter 350, which will cost Rs 1,62,292 (ex-showroom Chennai) post GST 2.0 as per the brand. If our prediction is true, then this pricing will help Yamaha steal some of the Hunter’s popularity, and will give the Japanese brand a fighting chance in the small-capacity retro segment.

roller coaster of emotions

Seeing this bike for the first time on road was nothing short of fabulous and i decided to buy it, the next day only, my personal experience has a lot of ups and down. - week 1 gear shifting was buttery smooth bus after 500kms it got stiff and rigid - mirrors do not suit the bike at all - very impressive performance - 10/10 road presence - suspension is slightly rigid in city commute - riding posture is a mix of sporty and aggressive - engine feels very smooth yet powerful at the same time overall the experience has been great, if you are looking for a bike for daily commute with a punch of power and occasional long rides, would 100% recommend buying it eyes closed, more importantly if you want a bike that makes you smile when you look at it, go for it.Read More

This bike is awesome and stable

I choose this bike because of performance and mileage. Everything is perfect in the bike and the look and design is really awesome. It looks like a racer bike. This bike suit me a lot because I am 5.6. The performance of this bike is really awesome. I can play with this bike and this is really awesome for cruising or for racing because it has high performance gears and stability of the bike is awesome. I will recommend this to buy because I get sufficient mileage for city rides and if I want to go to highway, I can get around 36 to 37 which is really nice for long tours and rides. It comes with very less weight.Read More
