Yamaha R15 vs Yamaha MT-15: Top 5 Differences Explained

The Yamaha R15 and the Yamaha MT-15 are two entry-level performance machines in the 155cc segment. Both share the same engine but are very different in some key areas. Here, we have compared the R15 V4’s top-end Intensity White variant with the quickshifter to the MT-15’s DLX variant, and have highlighted the top 5 differences:

Looks

The Yamaha R15 is a fully faired sports bike which takes design inspiration from the higher capacity Yamaha R1. The bike looks properly sporty and has a very aggressive demeanour overall and will be loved by enthusiasts who like faired bikes.

The Yamaha MT-15, on the other hand, gets a streetfighter look. It gets a single projector-LED headlight, which is flanked by slanted LED DRLs. The headlight section looks similar to the face of a Transformer robot, adding character to the bike. The tank is also quite muscular, and the extensions make it look the part of a performance-oriented streetfighter.

Ergonomics

When it comes to comfort, the Yamaha MT-15 V2 has a major advantage over the R15 because of its wide single-piece handlebar that’s much easier to reach. While the footpegs are rear-set, they’re not as aggressively rear as the R15. This combination makes it a lot easier to live with for daily commutes. 

On the other hand, the R15 is all about commitment. Its low-slung clip-ons and rear-set footpegs mean the rider will have to lean much forward. While this gives greater control while riding aggressively, it will not be comfortable on everyday commutes, especially on roads with heavy traffic. 

The Yamaha MT-15 has a long single-piece seat, which is comfortable enough for short city commutes. The only issue is that the pillion seat is a bit too small, and not as comfortable or spacious as the rider seat. On the R15, there’s a split seat setup, which helps the rider sit securely. However, the pillion seat is pretty tall and narrow, so it is best only for very short rides. 

So overall, when it comes to practicality, the Yamaha MT-15 is a much better choice for city rides and occasional weekend trips. On the other hand, the Yamaha R15 is something that can be best enjoyed in the twisties and the track.  

Performance

Both bikes are powered by the same 155cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine, which produces 18.4PS at 10,000rpm. On the Yamaha R15 the engine produces 14.2Nm, whereas on the MT-15, it produces 14.1Nm. The Yamaha R15 V4 Intensity White variant that we are considering in this story also gets a quickshifter (upshifts only).

The brand has made some changes to the sprockets to tune the performance to meet different needs. The Yamaha R15 has a smaller 48-tooth rear sprocket, while the Yamaha MT-15 has a larger 52-tooth rear sprocket. In the real world, the Yamaha R15 has better top-end performance, while the Yamaha MT-15 gives slightly better mid-range and bottom-end. A larger rear sprocket ensures better acceleration but at the expensive of top-speed, whereas a smaller rear sprocket offers better top-speed but the acceleration may not be as strong. 

For the twisties and track, the R15’s top-end performance will be perfect, and the quickshifter should make it possible to make upshifts without having to use the clutch. For city riding, the Yamaha MT-15’s better bottom-end and mid-range might feel better and more engaging. Also, the Yamaha R15 is one of the bikes under Rs 3 lakh that gets a slipper clutch, which is quite an interesting feature.

Dimensions

There’s one major change in terms of dimensions: the Yamaha MT-15 has a 10-litre fuel tank. The Yamaha R15, on the other hand, has a slightly larger 11-litre tank. The slightly larger fuel tank along with the more aerodynamic design, should ensure slightly better range for the R15, at least theoretically. 

Another major difference between the two is the seat height. The Yamaha MT-15 has a seat height of 810mm, while the Yamaha R15 has a seat height of 815mm. The difference is not massive, but the wider profile of the Yamaha MT-15’s seat makes it feel a bit taller compared to the Yamaha R15.

The price difference between the two models comes to Rs 8,429, which is not a big difference. If you’re someone who is looking for a supersport with sporty looks, good top-end performance and also a quickshifter, you can go for the Yamaha R15 V4 Intensity White. This is provided you’re willing to live with the aggressive riding posture.

If you are looking to get a similar level of performance (though, friendlier for city rides), but in a more comfortable package, then the Yamaha MT-15 makes more sense.
