Launched alongside the Vespa 70th Anniversary Edition, the Vespa 946 Emporio Armani becomes the second most expensive scooter to be sold in India

Piaggio has launched the Vespa 70th Anniversary Edition in India today, along with its most premium scooter, the Vespa 946 Emporio Armani. The former has been priced at Rs 96,500, while the latter comes with a surprisingly premium price tag of Rs 12.04 lakh (both ex-showroom, Pune). The Vespa 946 Emporio Armani was first showcased in India at the 2016 Auto Expo, while the 70th anniversary edition is a new offering from the company.

Introduced to celebrate the Piaggio Group's 130th anniversary and the 40th anniversary of the Giorgio Armani fashion house in 2015, the Emporio Armani edition of the scooter gets some interesting style features. The name '946' evokes the history of Vespa as the company was born in 1946, and that reflects in its interesting retro-futuristic design as well. The scooter gets a unique grey-green paint scheme, with galvanised satin treatment and a green shade visible only under certain light conditions. Moreover, the edition features the ‘Emporio Armani’ branding on many of its parts, such as the headlight casing and the side panels.

The Vespa 946 Emporio Armani edition is powered by a fuel-injected 125cc engine, delivering 11.9PS of power and a peak torque of 10.3Nm. Despite keeping the heritage in every feature, the company has chosen to go the advanced route when it comes to safety. So, the scooters come blessed with features like front and rear disc brakes, ABS (anti-lock braking system) and ASR (anti-slip regulator) traction control system.

The Vespa 946 comes with performance similar to most common scooter and its design and styling is the only thing that you are paying for.  Now, it will be quite interesting to see what kind of buyers show their interest in owning this expensive piece of art in India.

Commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Vespa brand, the other new offering is a special edition of the existing Vespa VXL model. Apart from the standard features of the scooter, the special edition gets an exclusive 'Azzurro 70' body colour, brown leather pattern seats with contrast white stitching and embossed 70th Anniversary Edition logo on it. Moreover, there is a fly screen, chrome rear carrier and perimeter guard, footstep, special glossy dust grey alloy wheels and a chrome 'Vespa 70th Anniversary Edition' badge on the glove box, to make it much different from the standard version.
