From the Kawasaki Ninja 300 to the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, here are some of the quickest bikes we’ve tested that won’t break the bank

Planning to step up from your everyday commuters to something performance-focused? But at the same time, don’t want to spend upwards of Rs 5 lakh on a new motorcycle? The good news is, you have a lot of options to choose from. We narrow it down to some of the quickest motorcycles that we’ve tested under Rs 5 lakh (ex-showroom).

5) Kawasaki Ninja 300

Price - Rs 2.98 lakh (ex-showroom India)

0 to 100kmph - 7.17 seconds

Kawasaki’s Ninja 300 maintains that perfect balance of peppiness and refinement, while also being quite livable with in the city. The credit of this goes to its 296cc liquid-cooled, parallel twin engine which makes 39PS of power and 29Nm of torque. Yes, it’s not the most powerful motor in this list, but it’ll get you to triple digits in just over 7 seconds. All this for under Rs 3 lakh (ex-showroom) pricing, and you have a pretty strong contender on your hands.

4) TVS Apache RR 310

Price - Rs 2.23 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)

0 to 100kmph - 7 seconds

Surprisingly, the TVS Apache RR 310 is quicker than the BMW G 310 twins (7.47 seconds 0-100kmph), while packing the same engine and gearbox. This is due to its aerodynamic design and retuned ECU, which allows it to get an extra 200rpm at the limiter. And despite being more performance-oriented the RR 310 is quite commuter-friendly even at slow speeds. There are barely any signs of lugging. In a nutshell, it may look intimidating but you can live with it on a day-to-day basis.

3) Royal Enfield Interceptor 650

Price - Rs 2.50 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)

0 to 100kmph - 6.54 seconds

While it may not look the part, the Interceptor 650 still manages to give you that goosebump-inducing adrenaline rush one associate with most performance machines. But, does that mean you have to compromise on practicality? Well, no. The engineers at Royal Enfield have made sure the all-new 648cc air/oil-cooled, parallel-twin engine is as refined as its competition. The result of that is a motorcycle which is as impressive in the city as it is on the highway while being priced way below its rivals.

2) KTM 390 Duke

Price - Rs 2.44 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)

0 to 100kmph - 5.98 seconds

Perhaps the most value-for-money motorcycle on our list, the KTM 390 Duke manages to check all the right boxes - be it a host of top-shelf features, sporty design and a powerful engine. Speaking of which, its 373.2cc, single cylinder, liquid-cooled mill isn’t as refined as some of its peers on this list. However, take it out on open roads and engine refinement will be the last thing on your mind. This is where the true hooligan comes out, propelling you from standstill to 100kmph in under 6 seconds, with just a pull of throttle.

1) Kawasaki Ninja 400

Price - Rs 4.69 lakh (ex-showroom India)

0 to 100kmph - 5.40 seconds

Let’s be honest. It’s difficult to overlook the Kawasaki Ninja 400’s preposterous price tag. But if you do manage to do that, there’s a good motorcycle waiting for you at the other end. Yes, technically the Ninja 400’s mill is based on the Ninja 300’s engine. However, Kawasaki has increased the bore and stroke dimensions, which has helped its now 399cc parallel-twin motor to extract an additional 10PS of power and 11Nm of torque over the Ninja 300. The result of that is segment-leading performance in terms of top speed and acceleration!
