Royal Enfield Himalayan 440 vs Himalayan 411: New vs Old Differences Explained

A bigger engine, an extra gear, and more features than before

Royal Enfield has launched the Himalayan 440 in India at Rs 2.29 lakh (ex-showroom, Chennai), 10 years after the launch of the original Himalayan 411. Here’s how the new bike differs from the OG Himalayan 411.

Design

The biggest similarity between the two motorcycles is their design. The Himalayan 440 retains the rugged, utilitarian styling of the Himalayan 411, with a large metal fuel tank, tall windscreen, split seat, high-mounted front fender, and minimalist body panels.

However, the 440 gets a few modern touches, including an LED headlight, three new colours: Sela Black, Mustang Brown & Nelong White, along with updated graphics.

Overall, both bikes look similar, but the new Himalayan 440 looks slightly more modern.

Engine & Gearbox

The new Himalayan 440 gets the 443cc, air and oil-cooled, single-cylinder engine from the Scram 440. It makes 25.4 PS and 34 Nm and is paired with a six-speed gearbox.

In comparison, the Himalayan 411 came with a 411cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine which made 24.3 PS and 32 Nm and was paired with a five-speed gearbox.

The small increase in power and torque, along with the addition of a six-speed gearbox, should make the Himalayan 440 better suited to highway riding compared to the older Himalayan 411.

Underpinnings

On paper, both bikes get similar underpinnings, with a telescopic fork and a monoshock. They also get the same 200 mm of wheel travel at the front and 180 mm of wheel travel at the rear.

Both bikes get disc brakes at both ends with dual-channel ABS. However, the main difference is that the Himalayan 440 gets switchable rear ABS, which should be handy while riding off-road.

Both bikes get an 800mm seat height, 220mm ground clearance and a kerb weight of 199kg.

Overall, Royal Enfield has not changed the original formula that made the Himalayan 411 so popular, while adding some useful features like switchable ABS.

Features

One of the biggest changes on the new bike is the features. The new Himalayan gets an all-new LED headlight, which is also shared with multiple Royal Enfield models.

The new bike gets a new semi-digital instrument cluster similar to the Scram 440. It gets an analogue speedometer with a digital display showing the fuel gauge, odometer and trip meters, but misses out on a tachometer.

The bike also comes with a Tripper navigation pod as standard, which enables Bluetooth connectivity for turn-by-turn navigation. The bike also gets a USB Type-C charging port for additional convenience, under the clutch lever.

The older bike had the iconic five-pod instrument cluster, which featured an analogue speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, and even a compass for directions. It also got the Tripper navigation pod as an accessory.

BikeDekho Says

The Himalayan 440 is essentially a modernised version of the original Himalayan 411. It retains the rugged design and simple underpinnings of the 411, while addressing some of its shortcomings with a larger engine, a six-speed gearbox, and more features.

The new Himalayan 440 manages to retain the simple and rugged nature that people liked about the Himalayan 411 while making it modern enough.
