BREAKING: All-New Yamaha YZF R2 Launched In India At Rs 2.30 Lakh

Japanese manufacturer Yamaha has finally launched the long-awaited YZF R2 in India. It will now sit right above the R15 V4 series in the brand’s lineup, giving enthusiasts another option to consider over the iconic R15. The new YZF R2 will rival the likes of the KTM RC 200, Hero Karizma XMR, and even the Suzuki Gixxer SF 250.

The Yamaha YZF R2 is priced at Rs 2,30,500 (ex-showroom, Delhi), and is available in three variants: Base, Mid and M.

Colours On Offer

The new Yamaha R2 is available in the following colours:

• Base Variant: Metallic Blue and Dark Bluish Gray

• Mid Variant: Matte White Pearl and Racing Blue

• M Variant: Metallic Gray 

The motorcycle gets Yamaha’s familiar R-series design language across all colour schemes, with the different paint options offering either a sportier or more understated appearance.

Design Inspired By Bigger R-Series Motorcycles 

The Yamaha R2 follows the same aggressive design philosophy seen on Yamaha’s larger R-series motorcycles. Despite being the second smallest model in the family, it gets a proper supersport silhouette which does make it look quite tempting.

The front-end features a sharp-looking twin LED DRLs along with a projector headlight, and a clean aerodynamic fairing. The aggressive fascia is  further complemented by a sculpted fuel tank, followed by a sleek looking tail-section. All of this together gives the motorcycle a very distinctive, yet familiar stance. Overall, the R2 looks unmistakably like a member of the Yamaha R family, with several design elements inspired by its larger siblings. 

Engine And Performance

The Yamaha R2 is powered by a 200 cc, single-cylinder engine developing 26.5 PS and 19.1 Nm (8.1 PS and 4.9 Nm more than the R15 V4 ). The motor is paired to a 6-speed gearbox, and there is also a slip and assist clutch. Just like the Yamaha R15 V4, the performance from this new 200 cc engine is also expected to be linear, along with good refinement on offer.

The Yamaha R2 also gets a fairly comprehensive equipment list. There are LED lights all-around, and it features a 5-inch TFT instrument console which supports smartphone connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, SMS/call alerts, and much more. Along with this, the rider can also connect to Yamaha’s Y-connect mobile application and access features like ride analytics, live vehicle location and much more. The top-spec M variant also gets keyless ignition with a key fob, there is also adjustable front and rear suspension, along with adjustable levers.

Hardware And Underpinnings

The Yamaha R2 is built around a steel tube diamond frame, while suspension duties are handled by a 37 mm inverted fork and a monoshock at the rear. The setup is expected to give the R2 a sporty riding character while retaining enough compliance for regular road use. There are disc brakes on the front with a four-piston Nissin caliper and on the rear it uses a Bybre caliper. The motorcycle rides on 17-inch alloy wheels at both ends with MRF tyres. For added safety, the bike comes equipped with dual channel ABS and a switchable traction control.

The Yamaha R2 should give enthusiasts a new entry point into its R-series family along with the already popular Yamaha R15 V4. Its success will ultimately depend on how Yamaha has balanced overall performance, equipment and handling. But with its aggressive styling, 204cc engine and R-series DNA, the R2 certainly looks like an interesting addition to Yamaha’s Indian portfolio.

It will primarily rival the KTM RC 200 in India. It could also attract buyers considering motorcycles from the slightly larger-capacity supersport segment. However, the R2’s biggest appeal is likely to be its combination of Yamaha’s R-series styling, accessible performance and compact dimensions.
