Yamaha has updated its range of scooters for 2019. For this year, the Ray ZR gets a maintenance-free battery and Unified Braking System (UBS). Owing to the updates, prices for the 2019 Yamaha Scooter models have gone up by Rs 400 for drum and Rs 600 for disc brake-equipped variants.
The Yamaha Ray ZR is one of the most stylish offerings from the Japanese automaker in the scooter segment. The distinguished front appearance that the Yamaha Ray ZR boasts is a product of its raked-out front apron design that encloses the headlamp. It gets an efficient 113cc air-cooled, 4-stroke single cylinder Blue Core engine that churns out 7.2PS @ 7500rpm and a maximum torque of 8.1 Nm @ 5000rpm. It has a mileage of 66kmpl (claimed) and a top speed of 80kmph (claimed). The Ray ZR is available in two variants: Drum and Disc. You have a choice amongst the five colour options: Darknight, Matt Green, Rooster Red, Maverick Blue and Fizz White. The drum brake variant of the bike retails at Rs 65.353 K (On road, Delhi), while the disc brake variant will cost you approx Rs 2450 more. The sporty scooter stands abreast its popular competitors, including Honda Activa 4G, TVS Jupiter and Honda Dio.

Displaying one of its best efforts to cash in on the boom of scooter market in India, Yamaha launched its most striking gearless scooter christened as Yamaha Ray ZR in 2016. The Ray ZR was unveiled at the Auto Expo 2016 and was promoted well by the company with the help of popular Indian rapper Badshah. The scooter catches your attention in awe with its distinguished styling that is a conduct of edgy body dynamics and sporty streaks.
Yamaha Ray ZR features a raked-out front apron design with an outlandish headlight design and the side indicators integrated into the side panel. The scooter draws grunt from the refined 113cc air-cooled, 2-valve 4-stroke single cylinder engine that generates 7.2PS @ 7500rpm and 8.1Nm @ 5000rpm worth of peak power and torque respectively. The ‘Blue Core’ technology enables this mill to offer you a mileage of 66kmpl.
The V-belt automatic transmission meshed with the engine transmits a seamless drive to the 10inch alloy wheels of the scooter. The braking duties are met by the mechanical leading-trailing drum brake units fitted on both ends of Yamaha Ray ZR. However, you can also opt for the hydraulic disc brake variant.
Along with a fascinating styling, the scooter also features excellent handling owing to the front telescopic forks and rear swing arm with coil spring shock absorbers. Yamaha Ray ZR has recently added a new Darknight colour shade to its array of appealing colour options that include Matt Green, Maverick Blue, Rooster Red, and Fizz White. The stylish scooter capably supports Yamaha’s chariot in the long run against its competitors, including – Honda Dio and Honda Activa i.
Design and Features
Striking and sporty, Yamaha Ray ZR features a purely enthralling design that is sure to earn praise from each onlooker. Revealing its athletic gene, the automaker has crafted a raked-out front apron design for the scooter that confidently holds Yamaha’s logo and the headlamp assembly. Going well in coordination with the sporty body dynamics is the graphics theme of the stylish scooter.
The Yamaha Ray ZR features an expressive taillight unit, while the tail indicators find their home on the mudguard of the scooter in a similar fashion as that of a bike. The edgy grab rails of the scooter further complement its sporty styling. Yamaha Ray ZR gets a funky analogue instrument console that fits in well with the overall styling.
Braking and Handling
The lightweight scooter offers a smooth driving experience owing to its road-hugging 90/100-10 53J tubeless tyres that sport reliable adherence while cornering. The stylish scooter is assisted with front and rear mechanical leading-trailing drum brake units that promise decent braking performance. You can also go for the front 170 mm hydraulic single disc brake option for more dynamic braking performance.
The scooter is integrated with a well-engineered suspension assembly that helps you negotiate potholes and speedbumps with ease. This suspension assembly consists of front telescopic forks and rear swing arm with coil spring shock absorbers. The scooter is dimensioned to feature a ground clearance of 130mm and a wheelbase of 1,270mm.
Safety and Features
Integrated as a mandatory feature for every two-wheeler in India since April 2017, Yamaha Ray sports an Automatic Headlamp On (AHO) unit, which ensures road safety through better visibility. With this, the optional 170mm front hydraulic disc brake unit in coordination with the rear drum brake produces enough retarding force to bring your vehicle to a standstill in the case of a close encounter. The halogen 35Watt multifocal headlamp unit of the scooter also offers sufficient illumination for clear visibility.
