Three budget-friendly performance-oriented bikes. Which one comes out on top in the battle of performance?
Suzuki launched its all-new full-faired Gixxer SF 250 to go up against some of the veterans in the segment like the Bajaj Dominar 400 and the Yamaha Fazer 25. All three bikes look impressive on paper, but the real-world conditions is where the actual test lies. We pit them against each other to find out which one comes out on top in the battle of performance.

Despite being the heaviest of the lot at 184kg (kerb), the extra displacement and sheer power from the Dominar 400 help it bolt off the line quicker than its competition. It’s also around 2 seconds quicker than the Gixxer while gunning from the 0-100kmph mark and almost 3.5 seconds faster than the Fazer 25. Both the Gixxer and Fazer may have the same displacement (249cc), but it’s the SF’s all-new engine with the extra 5.6PS on tap that comes out on top compared to the Fazer.

The Dominar 400’s linear power delivery helps during quick overtakes as well, be it in the city or out on the highway. The Gixxer comes in a close second with its tractable motor which has enough grunt to shave almost half a second off the Fazer’s roll-on times.

All three bikes come equipped with dual-channel ABS. However, the Dominar’s radially mounted caliper and larger 320mm front disc clearly has the advantage here and does a better job at anchoring the bike. It may surprise you that the older Fazer 25 managed to outperform the Gixxer SF in terms of braking performance. But there’s a good reason for this: the Gixxer was tested in wet conditions.

The Dominar 400 maybe the fastest bike here, but its engine which runs a DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft) layout tends to run hotter and burn more fuel in order to extract more performance. The result is lower fuel efficiency in the city. The Fazer, on the other hand, with its shorter gearing has the most fuel-efficient engine of the trio in the city. Out on the highway though, the bike tends to lag behind thanks to the lack of a 6th gear.
In terms of overall fuel-efficiency, it's the Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 that takes the crown. Its tractable motor paired with short gearing means you can ride around the city in higher gears, which helps return good fuel efficiency. The addition of the 6th gear along with a motor that feels unstressed at speeds of upto 100kmph results in impressive fuel efficiency while touring as well.
