Having difficulty choosing the right bike from Royal Enfield’s stable? We’re here to help

Royal Enfields aren’t exactly a breed that can be taken in the same breath as the other biking names. They don’t play by the same rulebook and neither are they made with the same focus; and thus, they aren’t targeted at the same class of bikers. In fact, there’s a lot more to owning an RE than meets the eye. The retro look, relaxed riding posture and the classic thump from the motor makes for a unique riding experience and has over the years amassed a massive cult following like no other.

Now, most Royal Enfield bikes might look the same barring a few, but the company has managed to incorporate subtle differences to make each bike, erm.. unique. Looking to buy one of these legendary machines? Let us help you choose the correct one.

Standard Street - Royal Enfield Bullet Electra, 350 and 500

Positioned as the entry level RE, the Standard RE isn’t feature rich; instead, it’s the minimalistic approach of the bike that attracts buyers. A simple 13.5-ltr fuel tank, a single elongated seat, chrome fenders that cover the majority of the wheel, skinny 19-inch tyres and a long chrome exhaust make up the design of the bike. To add, its round headlamp, analogue speedometer and 3D badging give it an elegant look.

The long elongated seat is the most comfortable of all the RE bikes, while the upright seating posture doesn’t strain your back in city traffic or on long hauls. Its skinny tyres may not aid in stability but they do offer sufficient grip when needed. The Standard models are essentially for buyers on a strict budget trying to hop onto the Royal Enfield train, unfazed by its lack of modern features. The Bullet ES, which is a step above the standard models, is offered with twin gas-charged shock absorbers, a front disc brake and electric start. The Bullet 500 fits enthusiasts looking for more power from the single-cylinder motor.

Retro Street - Royal Enfield Classic 350 and 500

The Classic 350 is the highest selling model available in RE’s stable. It’s chrome-crowned headlight, teardrop fuel tank, round mirrors, analogue dials and single saddle seat are reminiscent of bikes from the 40’s. An option of a bolt-on rear seat is an added bonus. Also, its low seat height is apt for the average Indian consumer. The bike is available in two engine options and a variety of colours to choose from. A shorter wheelbase compared to the Standard variant and a low centre of gravity translate to better riding dynamics of the motorcycle. However, if you desire more power from the Classic, the 500 motor is the way to go.

The Classic 350 Redditch Edition is a tribute to Royal Enfield motorcycles from the 50's such as the Crusader, Clipper, Bullet and Meteor. The bike is available in three distinctive solid tones of red, green and blue, which might appeal to enthusiasts looking for a Classic Enfield with a rich heritage. The Classic 350 Redditch Edition is also available with a rear disc brake.

Royal Enfield recently launched the Classic 500 Pegasus, a limited edition model based on the standard variant. What you get for the extra dough is a bike that shares its history with the legendary World War II bike christened the ‘Flying Flea’. The heritage paint job and additional accessories give it the look of a motorcycle from World War II. The bike comes with a set of military-style canvas panniers bearing the Pegasus logo and a maroon and blue Pegasus emblem on the fuel tank. Each bike also features a unique stencilled serial number on the fuel tank and the trademark ‘Made Like a Gun’ decal on the battery box. To know more about the bike, click here.

Cruiser - Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350-500 and Thunderbird X -

The Thunderbird’s massive 20 ltr fuel tank, low seating and forward-set foot controls are perfect for long-distance cruising, although the handlebars do take some time to get used to. The rear backrest provides enough support for the pillion rider, which can also be removed to mount luggage. The Thunderbird is the most feature-rich bike to come from Royal Enfield’s stable. Both the Thunderbird 350 and 500 get dual tripmeters with average speed readout, digital fuel gauge, projector headlamp with LED DRLs and a rear LED tail light. It’s also one of the most budget-friendly sub-600cc cruisers available in the market. The Thunderbird 350 is perfect for customers who use the bike for city rides and occasional highway touring, while the 500 has sufficient grunt for long hauls.

In contrast to the Standard Thunderbird, the Thunderbird X is targeted towards a younger audience. Its brightly coloured fuel tank, colour-matched rim stickers and modern alloy wheels help it stand out from the rest of the pack. It does away with the backrest and the ape-like handlebar for a much sportier flat handlebar.

Himalayan -

The Himalayan is the most affordable adventure touring motoring motorcycle available in India today. Practical in every sense, the bike is purpose-built for adventure touring and light off-roading. The minimal use of body panels ensures fewer worries in case of a fall. Its tall handlebars, low seat height, narrow fuel tank and footpeg positioning make it perfect for adventure touring. Its BSIV-compliant, 411cc, air-cooled engine with oil cooler is the most refined amongst the RE lot. The Himalayan is the perfect companion for off-road enthusiasts on a budget.
