Here are reasons why you should consider buying the KTM 200 Duke or skip it

Before the arrival of the KTM 125 Duke and RC 125, the 200 Duke was the most affordable KTM you could lay your hands on. However, unlike the two entry-level KTM’s, this one offers serious performance. It was recently updated with a single-channel ABS setup that increased its retail price to Rs 1.62 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). At this price, there are a lot of other options you can look at. However, if you have set your mind on buying the KTM 200 Duke, here are some pros, cons and reasons to buy or avoid the KTM 200 Duke.

Pros:

Premium underpinnings:
The 200 Duke gets high-spec underpinnings in the form of a lightweight trellis frame, an aluminium swingarm and premium suspension like White Power upside down fork and monoshock. It gets MRF Revz radial tyres. Braking is via ByBre radially mounted front calipers with a single-channel ABS as standard.

Most powerful 200cc bike:
While 200cc bikes like the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V and Bajaj Pulsar NS200 offer power outputs in the range of 20.5 to 23PS, the KTM 200 Duke’s 199.5cc liquid-cooled and fuel injected motor makes 25PS and 19.5Nm of torque. Given the fact that it weighs just 134kg (dry), the KTM 200 Duke is quick to reach 100kmph and has a top speed of 136kmph.

Fantastic handler:
The sharp steering geometry, premium suspension components and the light weight make the KTM 200 Duke an agile handler. It is quick to turn in and offers fantastic lean angles on the racetrack.

Cons:

Not for the novice rider:
Owing to its quick revving motor and sharp throttle response, the KTM 200 Duke can feel a handful in the hands of an inexperienced rider. Also, the bike packs enough performance to get you into trouble if you are not alert enough.

Not comfortable for touring:
The KTM 125 Duke features high, rear-set footpegs that have your legs bent more than they would on say the Apache RTR 200. While this position makes it easier for you to move around on the bike, it isn't suited for long distance touring. Also, the narrow seat and stiff suspension setup can cause problems during long distance touring.

Not fuel efficient:
While the rest of the 200cc bikes offer fuel efficiency in the mid 40kmpl range, the KTM 200 Duke’s fuel efficiency hovers in the mid-30s range. That and the small 10.5-litre fuel tank means a limited range of around 350km.

Should you buy one?
The KTM 200 Duke has been the go-to bike for performance on a budget and for good reason. Its performance and agility has won it a fan following but that performance comes at the expense of comfort and limited touring capability. The KTM 200 Duke is a fantastic everyday bike provided you have enough riding experience and do not mind the supermoto-style ergonomics.
