Kolkata Police has recently purchased five Harley-Davidson Street 750s for use in its motorcycle fleet. These bikes were seen during the August 15 Independence Day celebrations, leading a convoy of VIP guests. These bikes seemed to replace the red Royal Enfield bikes, which were as synonymous with the Kolkata Police as their white uniforms.

The Street 750 bikes have been customised to police-spec. The headlamp cowl carries the ‘Kolkata Police’ insignia while the rest of the body panels carry a chequered livery. The crash guard has police strobe lights and sirens mounted on either side. There are also panniers on both sides and a rear seat cowl.

The reason why the Kolkata Police opted for the Street 750 might be because at Rs 5,89,528 (on-road, Kolkata), it is the most affordable Harley cruiser and the most affordable 750cc bike on sale in India. The fact that it is made in India gives all the more incentive for an Indian government body to buy one. The Street 750 gets a 750cc liquid-cooled V-twin.

The motor makes 59Nm of torque at 3750rpm and should propel the bike to speeds close to 200kmph with ease. Kolkata is the second state to buy Harley-Davidson Street 750s for its fleet following the Gujarat Police that bought six Street 750 motorcycles in 2015. The Kolkata Police intend to use these bikes for VIP movement and police functions.
