The Ninja ZX-4R is very closely priced to the Kawasaki Z900

In order to further spice up the sub-500cc segment in India, Kawasaki has finally launched the Ninja ZX-4R here. And the funny thing is, it is more expensive than the Kawasaki Ninja 650.

Price & Rivals

With a price tag of Rs 8.49 lakh, the Ninja ZX-4R is not only more expensive than the Ninja 650, priced at Rs 7.16 lakh, but is also closely priced to the Kawasaki Z900 which costs  Rs 9.20 lakh. All prices ex-showroom.

Being a four-cylinder sub-500cc bike, the Ninja ZX-4R doesn’t really have any direct rivals and belongs to a segment of its own. However, the closest rivals are the Kawasaki Ninja 400 and the upcoming Aprilia RS 457.

Now sure, it is expensive, but it packs some real heat.

  • While it does get aggressive styling, the overall design language can be easily mistaken for the other supersports in the family. Especially Ninja 400.

  • Powered by a 399cc inline-four engine which makes 77PS at 14,500rpm and 39Nm at 13,000rpm

  • With the help of a RAM air intake, the power can be bumped up to 80PS

  • 37mm Separate Function USD fork (120mm travel) with a monoshock (112mm wheel travel)

  • For braking it gets two 290mm discs up front and a 220m single disc at the rear

  • Rolls on 17-inch wheels wrapped in 120/70 (F) and 160/60 (R) W-rated tyres

  • Features a 4.3-inch TFT console. Also gets smartphone connectivity and two display modes - Normal and Circuit. The Circuit mode gives a racetrack-ready display

  • 800mm seat height | 189kg kerb weight | 15-litre fuel tank | 135mm ground clearance

When it comes to hardware and the powerplant, the Ninja ZX-4R is surely a beast, however, with the pricing, this supersport will be a niche bike catering to enthusiasts with heavy pockets. Oh, and one reason it is so expensive is that it comes to India via the CBU (completely built unit) route.

If you put in a little more money, you could get the Z900, which not only boasts of more power but a lot more torque, not to mention the more versatile ergonomics thanks to its streetfighter styling. But if you are looking for a performance-packed, versatile sub-500cc supersport, then the Ninja 400 is a very capable bike at a little more than half the price.
