Kawasaki KLX230: Old vs New Differences Explained

Kawasaki recently launched the 2026 KLX230 in India at a much affordable price tag of Rs 1.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). This makes it a whopping Rs 1.31 lakh more affordable than the 2025 model. However, there are some major differences between these two motorcycles, and we explain.

Design 

For 2026, Kawasaki has given the KLX230 slightly different body panels. However, the changes are subtle and they do not affect the overall appearance by much. The Lime Green and Grey paint scheme remains unchanged but the graphics are all new. With all these small changes, the KLX230 feels fresh while still looking the part of a proper old-school dual-sport motorcycle. 

Engine 

The 233cc air-cooled engine and 6-speed gearbox remains unchanged, however the 2026 variant does get a different engine tune, and the power and torque figures have slightly gone up. The bike now makes 19PS and 19Nm, that is 0.9PS and 0.7Nm more than the 2025 variant. Other than this, the new variant also gets a new exhaust with completely different routing.

Underpinnings 

The 2026 Kawasaki KLX230 gets the same steel tube frame that is now finished in gloss black, earlier it was finished in matte silver. It uses a completely different suspension setup from Endurance, with 220mm wheel travel for the telescopic fork and 223mm of wheel travel for the rear monoshock. The 2025 model came with Showa suspension setup that had 240mm front wheel travel and 250mm rear wheel travel. Also, at 255mm the ground clearance has gone down by 15mm. That said, expect the bike to be still capable enough despite the lower suspension travel and ground clearance - at least for most of the offroad riders.

The new motorcycle also gets bigger non-petal disc brakes, with a 290mm front disc and a 230mm rear disc. The old bike came with a smaller 265mm front and a 220mm rear petal disc brake setup. The new bike is expected to perform slightly better with these bigger discs. 

Features

The major difference in terms of features is that the new KLX230 comes with switchable single channel ABS, while the old bike came with switchable dual channel ABS. Other features remain unchanged, as both bikes get an LED headlight, halogen indicators and a basic digital instrument console that shows all the necessary information like speed, time, fuel level, odometer and trip meter readings, and a gear position indicator. 

Price & Verdict

The price difference between these two motorcycles is quite massive, so much so that it came down from being compared (price-wise) with the KTM 390 Enduro to the Hero Xpulse 200 4V Pro. The brand was able to pull this clever move by heavy localisation. While the changes in the underpinnings of the 2026 model isn’t all that much of a dealbreaker, we wish it retained the dual-channel ABS. That said, one cannot really complain considering the massive price cut.
